Wow Cape Town Wine Tasting Tours

Join this seasoned tour operator for a personal, one-of-a-kind Cape Winelands experience

Flanked by the majestic towers of mountains in the Hottentots-Holland, Franschhoek and Wemmershoekberg ranges, the Cape Winelands is the largest wine producing region in the Western Cape and boasts some of the most scenic routes in the world. Visitors have the chance to explore this breathtaking territory and a few of its historic wine estates with seasoned guide and Capetonian Rushdie Harper and his top-class Wow Cape Town Tours.  Named for the sound most tourists make (“Wow!”) as they round each corner in the Mother City, the tailor-made, private tours take visitors along the pictureseque valleys and hills of Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch for personal wine tasting experiences in South Africa’s gorgeous grape country.

Each of these small towns is well known for the world-class reds and whites produced in the cellars of their internationally recognised wine farms, and with Wow Cape Town Tours, wine connoisseurs and tasting novices get to sample the best of the best according to their own preferences. Rushdie’s excursions cater to all kinds of travelers and locals – families, friends, couples – who want to be guided through the extensive land of vineyards, but who also don’t want to get lost in the crowds normally associated with larger tours. And because he is well versed in the ins and outs of the Western Cape, Rushdie tends to incorporate his own knowledge and anecdotes to create a colourful, one-of-a kind wine tour that you won’t quickly forget (depending on how much Pinotage you’ve tasted, of course).

Wow Cape Town Tours offers either private half-day or full-day adventures, is extremely flexible when it comes to the tour schedule and plans three stops according to your preference for either reds or whites. A typical trip starts at 9am from your desired pick-up spot in Cape Town in either a luxury sedan or a minibus, depending on the size of your group. First, it’s off to Paarl for a cellar tour at the award-winning KWV estate or, for those who prefer a less commercial experience, the off-the-beaten-path Fairview wine and cheese farm. This is followed by a visit to Vrede en Lust, where the winery’s lovely ladies dish up personal tastings of their boutique vintages with a side of local history.

Then it’s over to the charming ‘French’ village and gourmet capital of Franschhoek for lunch either at La Petite Ferme restaurant, which was listed by international luxury magazine Condé Nast Traveler as one of the top 15 best value establishments in the world, or at the charming and sublimely serene Dieu Donné Vineyards. If there is a little time to spare after dining on quality culinary delights, you can take a stroll around the quaint and classy town; otherwise, it’s off to Stellenbosch via the majestic Helshoogte Pass for the final tasting, which usually takes place at Delaire Graff Estate.

Those who opt for the half-day tour start in Stellenbosch and head towards the outskirts of Paarl before returning to Cape Town in the early afternoon.

Wow Cape Town Tours also caters for families with younger children by including an optional stop at Drakenstein Lion Park, Monkey Town, Butterfly World or Le Bonheur Crocodile Farm. In the end, the wine tasting experience is designed to pander to your needs completely; you can decide whether you’d like to have a tight hold on the reins or would rather put the nitty gritty into someone else’s hands.

  • Embark on a wine cellar tour: Whether it’s you first or your fiftieth time visiting a vineyard, you always get a special feeling when you get to see how your favourite vintage gets from grape to bottle. Not to mention, these insightful tours give visitors the chance to converse with the winemaker and connect with and really appreciate each sip and swirl.
  • Drink in the beautiful scenery: Rushdie makes it a point to include the most scenic wineries he can find, so the tastings are as pleasing on the eyes as they are on the palate. Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch are surrounded by Lord of the Rings-esque hills, and the panoramic views that unravel from the stoeps of the vineyard tasting centres make the entire outing feel that much more magical.
  • Indulge in fine food: Franschhoek boasts some of the finest food in the country as well as a few internationally acclaimed restaurants, so visitors have a chance to try the very best in local South African cuisine. Picture creative taste combinations, top chefs and fresh ingredients served up against an amazing backdrop.

  • You get to ride with experienced and friendly guides: Wow Cape Town Tours is a family-run operation that was established in 2007, and a trip with Rushdie or one of his guides is akin to an old friend letting you in on the secrets of all their favourite places.
  • You get a completely personalised experience: The day’s activities are tailored to your taste; plus, the excursions are more interactive and conversational than a regular, bus-with-a-mic journey.
  • They are perfect for practically everyone: Single travelers, groups of friends, families and even those with young kids can join Wow Cape Town Tours’s Winelands experiences, as they offer the transport and activities to accommodate all kinds of needs.
  • It’s an ideal pre- or post-conference sightseeing adventure: If you’re only in Cape Town for a short time and need to get your sightseeing fix quick, the half- or full-day tours are an ideal all-in-one package.
  • They offer a variety of tour packages, so you don’t have to miss a thing: Those who have more time or want an all-round Mother City experience can look into Wow Cape Town Tours’s range of packages, like the recently added Food Tours, which include guesthouse accommodation, Cape Malay cooking lessons and wine estate and Cape Peninsula tours.

Booking enquiries can be made on the Wow Cape Town Tours website by emailing or by calling +27 (0) 21 697 0174.

Each tour includes three wine tastings and a cellar tour. Lunch at the wine estate is for patrons’ own cost and so is the cost of wine tasting at each winery (allow approximately R30p/p for each wine estate). The half-day tour runs from 9am to 1:30pm or from 1pm to 6pm, and the full day-tour runs from 9am to 6pm.
