Things to Do on Women's Day in Cape Town

Celebrate and commemorate all the fearless women in your life with our pick of fabulous things to do in the Mother City!

Last Update: 28 July 2017

Women’s Day falls on a Wednesday this year, and the mid-week is the perfect time to treat yourself or that unique lady in your life to our selection of excellent specials and events. While the official holiday is only one day, celebrations are taking place all week, as well as on the weekend. This gives all women the chance to do something special. Women’s Day commemorates ladies who fought for their rights and dignity as they pushed back against the apartheid regime’s pass laws, which required people of colour who were over the age of 16, to carry pass books (containing personal information) around with them at all times. In 1956, well over 20 000 women marched to the Union Building in Pretoria in fierce defiance of the oppressive apartheid laws. On Women’s Day, we celebrate the magic, beauty, love and strength in every woman.

Relax and enjoy a night of good food, great wine and even better female company at HQ Restaurant! On Tuesday, 8 August 2017 this classy spot will be hosting a Girls Night in celebration of Women’s Day on Wednesday, 9 August 2017. Ladies will be treated to a salad starter, a main course of steak and chips, and a delectable dessert, all paired with Boschendal red wine. Upon arrival girls will be given a glass of Boschendal bubbly to set the tone for the evening. The musical entertainment on the night will be provided by Ricky Botsis and DJ Anthea Scholtz, so make sure you wear your dancing shoes.

COST: The price for attending the Girls Night Out is R280p/p and bookings can be made with HQ directly on either or +27 (0)21 424 6373.

This live music party at the Bay Harbour Market, in Hout Bay, comes just in time for Women’s Day (a public holiday – so you can stay up late!). Rush over to the dancefloor and squeak some takkies to Indie bands and lekker DJs – all local talent. The talented Ottoman Slap band and The Rudimentals will take the stage with vocals and instruments; DJs Richard Marshall and Pascal & Pearce will be scratching records up on the decks. You’ll find food stalls and bars to keep you going, and you can take a break from the dancefloor and enjoy a crackling fire in the chill areas. The event also contributes to a good cause – a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to Little Angels Childcare Centre in Hangberg.

COST: Tickets can be purchased online at; they cost R150p/p, plus a R5 fee ordering them from Quicket. The mischief and fun begins at 7:30pm and ends at 2am. Please note that PartyRepublica is Over 21s only.

The seventh annual Night of Queens event is back this month for one night only to celebrate Women’s Day and the power of women, at restaurant SoChilla African Cuisine. This girls’ night out will treat women from diverse backgrounds like the queens they are as they party in style. As well as a party, this is a mecca for brand activation, idea sharing, fashion, song, talent showcasing and more, where you can network with other women and build business connections. It is also the launch of Yolisa Mufaro’s book Word Your Mouth. The event was started by Pincode Concepts in 2010 with the aim of uniting women from across our beautiful city through an evening of great music, intelligent business discussions and networking in an elegant atmosphere. This Night of Queens is not to be missed!

COST: Tickets cost R100p/p for general access or R350p/p for VIP access. These can be purchased online via or at the door on the night. If you and your fellow queens would like some extra royal treatment, you can also get a VVIP table package that admits four people for R3000, which includes finger foods, two bottles of bubbly, and two bottles of premium vodka and cognac. You can reserve this package by phoning 079 484 0318. Doors open at 3pm and it’s going ‘til late!

Inject some humour into your month with dinner theatre at the Cape Town Comedy Club. Some of the top lady comedians in the country will be taking to the stage to make you laugh until your abs can’t take it anymore (it’s a great workout!). Enjoy a delicious meal and a drink from the bar at the same time. The line-up is subject to change, but as of right now it includes comic giants Mel Jones, Tracy Klass and Angel Campey. Ladies will all receive a FREE cocktail if they attend this night of laughs on Women’s Day (Wednesday, 9 August).

Please be aware that the comediennes are not censored, which means some material may not be appropriate for sensitive audiences. No under-18s will be allowed.

COST: Tickets range from R50p/p to R120p/p. You can book yours online at Whilst the comedy kicks off at 8:30pm, dinner begins at 6pm and happy hour is from 6 to 7pm. For more information, email or phone +27 (0)21 418 8888 or +27 (0)79 495 3989.

Tip: Café Caprice also does delicious cocktails if you’re in that sort of mood!

You can spend the cash you save on an extra drink! Tempt your taste buds with mouthwatering buns and patties, like the Dreamy Burger with creamy mushroom sauce or perhaps the Royal Burger, a tower with melting cheese and bacon – delicious!

This multimedia exhibition explores violence against women and children. It involves a collection of work by artists in various mediums, including painting, film, dance and music. The showcase honours the children and women who have lost their lives to rape and murder in the country, drawing attention to these tragedies in a sensitive and personal way. Together with stirring musical performances and visual art, there will be several panel discussions and a workshop around the topic. Finally, the exhibition provides a safe space where victims and their loved ones can share in the love and healing that the experience seeks to promote. Come down to the Old Heritage Halls at Cape Town’s Castle of Good Hope and witness a moving exhibition about an issue that it particularly difficult, but very important, to address.

COST: Admission is free and the event is kid friendly. The exhibition will be opening at 11am on Wednesday, 9 August (Women’s Day) and continue until Sunday, 24 September 2017. If you need any more information, please feel free to contact Yazeed Kamaldien via or +27 (0)82 682 2438.
