The Peninsula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA) annual Celebrity Chefs Challenge Dinner will once again delight palates – and raise funds – at the Granger Bay Hotel School Restaurant in Mouille Point on Saturday, 12 October 2013.
Four celebrity chefs have been tasked with the challenge of creating a six-course gourmet menu for guests using only the staple ingredients the PSFA uses to feed over 22 000 learners on a daily basis. The chefs will collaborate on the starter and dessert course, but each individual culinary master will also have the opportunity to conjure up their own delightful creation, as well.
This year, Reuben Riffel (a man who needs little introduction) along with Executive Chef at the award-winning Tasting Room restaurant in Franschhoek Margot Janse, Head Chef at the Môreson’s Bread and Wine restaurant Neil Jewell and Chris Erasmus from Pierneef à La Motte will give the task a go with samp, beans, pilchards, maize, butternut, carrots, lentils and sugar beans.
Besides this master chef experience, diners will be treated to the charming Africa Melane – Cape Talk DJ – as emcee and auctioneer of exclusive items.
About the Peninsula School Feeding Association’s (PSFA)
A non-profit organisation, PSFA was established in 1958 when the government school feeding programme was discontinued. The Rotary Club of Paarden Eiland (now Table Bay) took action and called a meeting, and from that day, the PSFA was formed and assumed responsibility for feeding learners who couldn’t do so themselves. Today, the organisation feeds daily meals to more than 22, 000 learners from 113 primary, secondary and special needs schools, while also initiating projects that promote household food security and sustainability.
Interest generated by an investment reserve covers all of the PSFA’s operating expenses; therefore, 100 percent of donations generated go towards the school feeding scheme. PSFA has a section 18A status, so all donations are tax deductable.
The Celebrity Chefs Challenge Dinner raised over R233, 100 in 2012, successfully feeding over 630 learners for an entire year, and the organisers have high hopes that they’ll be able to beat that total this year.
