Join fellow philanthropists and good-hearted humans for a cultural evening at the Artscape Opera House on Wednesday, 20 April 2016. The event will raise money for the annual Unogwaja Challenge and the Unogwaja Light Fund, which aims to support community based organisations that focus on education and skills development.
The Unogwaja Challenge is a yearly event that sees 12 cyclists from around the world set off from Cape Town and head to KwaZulu-Natal on a 10 day trip to participate in the Comrades Marathon on the 11th day. It all began in 2011, when the original Unogwaja team (WP van Zyl, Lourens van Zyl, Paul Blake and John McInroy) decided they would follow in the bicycle tracks of the youngest Comrades Marathon winner, Phil Masterton-Smith.
An extraordinary young fellow (he was 19 years old at the time), Masterton-Smith cycled from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg in 1933 to take part in the marathon because he couldn’t afford the train fare. Despite cycling over 1660km for 10 days straight prior to the race, the youngster still managed to finish the annual ultra marathon in 10th place.
