Greenpoint Stadium Visitor Centre Connects Soccer and Stadium
Cape Town is gearing up for FIFA 2010, and the Greenpoint Stadium Visitor Centre is a must-see
Important: Please note that tours of the the Green Point Stadium have unfortunately been put on hold until further notice.

The Greenpoint Stadium Visitor Centre
is a unique hub filled with fascinating soccer memories and icons, and also provides you with an opportunity to walk through Cape Town’s new 2010 Soccer World Cup Stadium.

When was the first soccer match in Cape Town played, and who was it between? Which were the most renowned soccer clubs? Who are South Africa’s most legendary soccer icons?

The answers to these and a great number of other soccer-related questions can be found within the Greenpoint Stadium Visitor Centre.

The visitor centre lies on the site of the old Greenpoint Stadium and just a few steps away from the new stadium, which will host eight matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

The Greenpoint Stadium Visitor Centre, the only one of its kind in South Africa, is a haven of fascinating information about the history of soccer in Greenpoint and the rest of South Africa, and is also the start and end point for Greenpoint Stadium tours.

The space is filled with
various regularly-updated exhibitions, mementos and walls of fame that showcase Cape Town’s and South Africa’s soccer history, from illustrious players such as Kalamazoo to renowned teams and legendary coaches.

For example, the Lennie Kleintjies Collection is a photographic treasure trove of momentous images from this famous sports journalist, while the Ladies Locker Room is a comprehensive visual recording of the history of women’s soccer in South Africa.

Step into the boardroom and you’ll see a huge architectural drawing and a detailed 3D model of the new stadium, as well as a number of locally-made products like makarabas, beaded soccer players, vuvuzelas – all that is uniquely South African.

Two intriguing green staircases lead up to the centre’s auditorium, each bearing the name of a local Cape Town soccer club and the year that it was founded, from Avalon Athletic in 1850 to Seapoint Swifts in 1922 and right through to Ajax Cape Town in 1999.

Many other words of wisdom and encouragement are emblazoned in every nook and cranny of the centre in the form of quotes – it’s hard to visit this centre and not leave feeling even more inspired and excited for 2010!

The auditorium in the centre can hold up to 150 seated visitors. Here you can watch an enlightening and charming play called The Greensman.

A viewing deck just outside the auditorium allows one to enjoy unrestricted views of the old stadium site and the new stadium in all its glory, to the backdrop of Table Mountain.

There has been strong interest in the Green Point Stadium Visitor Centre, especially from Germany.

"Last year we had more Germans than South Africans! But this year local interest has grown hugely. We also get many visitors from South America, Holland and France. We also have bookings from groups of architects from all around the world,” says Visitor Manager Bernadette Van Vuuren-Smyth.
