The best kitesurfing spots in Cape Town for more experienced surfers are generally located along the Southern Peninsula while the Northern Peninsula generally has the best kitesurfing spots for intermediate kitesurfers (except for Hakgat, which is suitable for experienced kitesurfers only).
The 10 Best Places to kitesurf in Cape Town according to CapeTownMagazine.com and Cabrinha Kiting in Blouberg are (in no particular order):
Sunset Beach: This beach is the best spot to kitesurf on light wind days (SE light wind). Sunset Beach boasts with the most consistent wind in the entire Peninsula. The beach also sports good all-round conditions for riding and jumping. Wind conditions here are at their best in the morning.
Dolphin Beach: Best known by locals and kitesurfing fans as ‘kite beach’, this is the best place to show off your hottest new moves, ‘cause it’s where all the hotshots hang out. The beach, located in Table View, Cape Town, is internationally recognized as one of the best kitesurfing spots in the world. Dolphin Beach is also a good kitesurfing spot for beginners. You start downwind from the hotshot crowd - so you'll be drifting away from them and not drifting through them - thus giving you ample space to practice undisturbed.
The Strand: Located about half an hour’s drive from Cape Town, the beach at Strand in False Bay offers riders the best southerly conditions for kitesurfing.
The river mouth next to Wang Thai restaurant (outside Blouberg): This is the best westerly spot to kitesurf in Cape Town.
Hakgat: This reefy spot between Melkbos and Big Bay is a good spot for wave riding. It is only recommended for more advanced riders. There are no road-signs showing the way to this kitesurfing spot so it is best to ask a local or phone Cabrinha.
Platboom: A good spot for wave riding. The beach is situated within the unspoiled wilderness of the Cape Point Nature Reserve and is one of the most scenic beaches in the entire Cape Town. The beach is excellent for wave riding and jumping. Platboom offers cross offshore winds and hollow peaking beach break conditions that are very rocky on the inside. The spot is only recommended for experienced riders.
Scarborough: This stunning scenic beach is a good spot for wave riding. Scarborough beach works if the swell is big. Scarborough offers riders blustery winds and smooth waves.
Misty Cliffs: A spot known for its incredibly beautiful setting at the foot of majestic cliffs and as a good location for wave riding. The spot is only suitable for experienced wave ridersthough.
Langebaan Lagoon: An excellent kitesurfing location for beginners. Langebaan Lagoon also offers some of the best flat water conditions in the world. The lagoon is situated an hours drive away from Blouberg and there’s affordable accommodation available right next to the beach, but no shops, so bring your own food and drinks.
Witsands: A beautiful beach in Scarborough for experienced riders. Witsands is slightly cross onshore in a South Easter and is quite a safe place to kitesurf as you’ll always get washed to shore should you break anything.
