What happens at The Bedroom stays at The Bedroom
Subtly situated on Buitengracht Street, The Bedroom offers a space for women to discover and explore their sexuality through insightful chats with well-informed and passionate assistants at the new-to-Cape Town boutique.
Owner Bonnie Brunton, who was a regular at The Bedroom in Umhlanga in Durban before deciding to make this her full-time vocation, intended to go into business in The Mother City by opening up an exclusive boutique, but decided against it when she realised that Cape Town has not yet opened up their doors to The Bedroom. And what’s more exclusive than a sensual boutique designed for women?
Although the franchise doesn’t exclude men, the main objective is to get women engaging in their sexual wellbeing. Bonnie, a widow, a mother of three ambitious daughters, a strong woman with female empowerment at the centre of her world, found that The Bedroom was the perfect fit for her. Upon hearing that her mother and now business partner would pursue this line of work, her daughter Tamarin Brunton not only supported her, but exclaimed, “Mum, this is perfect for us!”, recalls Bonnie.
“The journey to obtaining The Bedroom was quite a wake-up call,” explains Bonnie. “I was a housewife and a swimming teacher for twenty-three years, and this was something that I wasn’t prepared for at all. Thank goodness my daughter has the business brain, I’m more of a creative.” Although Tamarin works mostly behind the scenes, the mother-daughter duo has been succeeding in their objective to empower women through this nationally trusted brand.
The Bedroom is more than your average sex shop, with a mix of pink and metallic coloured décor, chandeliers, antique mirrors and a vintage record player to create a calm, comfortable atmosphere for women to come in with their girlfriends, browse around without the negative connotations attached to similar services on offer. “People may be hesitant at first because of the sleaze factor which surrounds similar establishments. But because we’re by women for women, it’s an educational experience,” says Bonnie with a proud smile. The establishment approaches sensuality and sexuality in a very professional manner, while maintaining a sense of empathy towards the subject matter.
The boutique are stockists of sex toys, locally made lingerie for all sizes from extra small to extra-extra-extra large, sensual accessories, candles and oils and erotic literature, the establishment isn’t licensed to sell pornographic movies and magazines.
Although the beautifully decorated feminine space was designed with women in mind, men are allowed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, “But, we’re quite relaxed with that. If women are browsing and men come in, we ask the women if they are comfortable, and if not, we will then ask the men to have a seat on our couch in the reception area and wait,” explains Bonnie. “Our women come first.”
Gentlemen are welcome to visit for a chat, advice or for some ideas to surprise their partners and spice up their sex lives. “My favourite clients are the gents who come in because their wives are going through menopause, and they have have no idea what to do,” says Bonnie, reminiscent. “I get goosebumps, because those are my customers”.
Downstairs, the space is filled with feminine pops of pink and blue at the entrance, leading to the section of various toys and products. From vibrators to lubricants endorsed by the South African Sexual Health Association, blow job bags, clitorally stimulating pebbles, flavoured lube and everything in-between. The sensual boutique is affiliated to many professionals in the industry, including doctors, gynaecologists, physiologists, and sexologists.
Upstairs, you can expect to find all things feminine and sexy! From books to French maid outfits, crotch-less underwear, mesh body suits and so much more. The best part is the gorgeous soft interior, overlooking Table Mountain, which will definitely spark a conversation for the uncensored!
Tip: The Bedroom also offers browse parties for women to gather, and talk about sex and sexuality in a safe environment, where sex toys and accessories are discussed. Or else, gather a couple of your ladies and bring them to The Bedroom for an insightful sexually exploratory experience.
