Home to one of Cape Town’s most affordable all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets
In the hustle and bustle of Green Point’s Main Road lies the secret to every Capetonians food desire: a hearty Sunday brunch special that encourages patrons to come hungry.
Café Extrablatt is housed in the Exhibition Building in Green Point. The eatery’s open plan style allows the natural light to make its way through the entire space. It feels as if the cosmos was working with the staff to create an atmosphere that signifies the ethos of Café Extrablatt: love for food and passion for people.
Upon arrival, we are greeted by the smiling faces of Bar Manager, Altaaf Petersen, and a few waitrons who look genuinely happy to see us. The staff allow us to choose where we would like to sit. Between the patio seating, the indoor booth-like seating and the corner couches, it’s actually a hard decision to make. We opt for the patio seats as we are able to look out onto the road and bathe in the natural light.
This international franchise opened up in Cape Town in 2011, with its roots in Germany offering a cosmopolitan twist on breakfast and brunch buffets on Saturday and Sunday.
The aroma of freshly cooked breakfast goods hits my nose and, immediately, I gravitate towards the buffet area. With dishes including everything from fruit salad, muesli and yogurt, an array of cereal and bread, including freshly baked croissants breadsticks and pretzels, to a selection of cheeses (from sliced cheddar to blue, goat’s milk to mozzarella), cold meats and salad. Café Extrablatt also offer a selection of warm foods like Russians, baked beans, bacon and eggs made exactly how you like them. Create a unique combination of fillings at the omelette station, where Chef Calvin Midzi will greet you with a friendly smile and cook up a storm with blazing flames and theatrics to make your day. You can also opt for scrambled or fried eggs, which Chef Calvin is more than willing to accommodate for. The brunch buffet also includes a lunch dish. These dishes changes regularly, but patrons can expect spaghetti bolognaise, cottage pie and more.
And just when you think you’re all filled up, Chef Calvin introduces you to his famous flapjacks, which are served with maple syrup and strawberries. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to keep an eye out for the breakfast’s dessert options, which change regularly and may include muffins and breakfast cheesecake slices.
Note: Café Extrablatt also offers a breakfast buffet special every Saturday, where patrons can expect all of the above, excluding the lunch dish.
