The Om Revolution Yoga Classes in Cape Town

The flexible fitness movement that facilitates private and corporate yoga sessions in unique spaces in and around the Mother City

It is rather strange to imagine that it took until late 2014 for a mobile yoga ‘studio’ to grace the Mother City.  After all, Cape Town is usually at the South African forefront of all things hip and happening – think craft beer, bicycle culture and experimental facial hair – but it seems to have dropped the exercise ball when it came to tapping into the ‘yoga that comes to you’ trend that is swooping the world.

Enter Austrian-born online marketing consultant and seasoned yogi Victoria Csarmann, who initially conceptualised the idea of a mobile yoga studio as part of a business plan for her personal instructor. But, as fate would have it, the instructor decided on a career change at the last minute and Victoria decided to take it on as her own project.

“There was a moment of revelation where I thought this could really work. I realised that there was this huge gap in the market, not only in terms of fulfilling clients’ needs, but also for yoga instructors in Cape Town who are struggling to get work,” says Victoria.

And so that ‘revelation’ turned into a revolution or, more specifically, The Om Revolution - a company that offers individually tailored, private and corporate yoga classes of any style (Hatha, Vinyasa and more) in Cape Town. Essentially, the venture takes the studio element out of practising the ancient form of meditation and fitness and replaces it with an “anywhere, anytime” option.

This means that beginner and advanced yogis alike have the option of participating in a yoga session in their home, backyard, outdoors in a beautiful location and even their office, and it eliminates some of the drawbacks associated many yoga studios: overbooked classes, instructors not giving adequate personal attention, undercurrents of competitiveness and , of course, personal space being invaded by a fellow yogi’s rogue limb.

“With The Om Revolution, you decide when and where you want to have your lesson and you also have the option of deciding who you want to join you for the session,” adds Victoria.

Of course, it is essential to execute the poses correctly in order to reap the benefits of yoga, which include increased flexibility, improved posture, core strength and a relaxed state of mind amongst many others.  To this end, The Om Revolution has even developed their own, tailor-made alignment mats that help you properly align your poses by using the guides printed on the mats, exclusively available at TheOm Revolution.

“The private or group sessions are small enough for the instructors to give everyone involved personal attention. And for corporate classes, if the employer wants to squeeze in as many people into the session as possible, I will let them know that that is not how The Om Revolution works, and I will suggest an extra session, for example,” explains Victoria.

Speaking of corporate classes, it is here especially that The Om Revolution has had great success, taking the business world by storm instructing one office yoga class after the other. Recently, they added on more corporate health options like healthy snack crates and office massage services, to complement their corporate service. Not to mention, for private sessions, if participants are comfortable and happy with a specific instructor they can request to have him/her facilitate all of their lessons.  Furthermore, the teacher will encourage beginner and experienced yogis to give feedback on the classes so that the pace, intensity and difficulty of the classes are tailored to individuals’ needs.

The Om Revolution also offers specialised pre- and post-pregnancy yoga classes as well as regular outdoor yoga sessions in and around Cape Town.  Victoria, who is an instructor herself, and also, as she puts it, “oversees everything else”- including sourcing qualified freelance instructors- can also organise group gatherings at a location of the client’s choice. Popular outdoor yoga options include sessions on Clifton beach and in the Company’s Garden.

Outdoor yoga is a completely unique experience,” adds Victoria. “There are the elements and other factors such as noises around you that really challenge you to focus and zone in on yourself.  I would suggest that if you want to do yoga properly, do it indoors, but for a summer experience, that one hour of connecting with nature is a beautiful thing.”

And while becoming one with the outdoors is certainly a plus, the fact that The Om Revolution caters to all ages, skill levels and body types is probably the biggest tick in the “yes” column.  As Victoria states, “One of the many benefits of a personalised class is that it can be customised for the individual’s needs.”

Tip: The Om Revolution facilitates outdoor yoga classes during summer in the Company’s Gardens on Saturday mornings (9am) for R50p/p (starting November 2016) and on Clifton beach on Sunday afternoon (at sunset – around 6pm) for R50p/p (starting December 2016). Century City outdoor Yoga classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6pm were added this year and have already started, costing R50p/p as well. theomrevolution.co.za for specials.

The Bill:  A single private yoga session in the comfort of your own home will set you back R350 (R150 per extra person). Group and corporate sessions are priced according to size and frequency, but do keep an eye on theomrevolution.co.za for specials.
