Unforgettable off-road freewheel adventures on Table Mountain and in Franschhoek

Capetonians are active people. You can’t drive 500m without a runner lapping you on the sidewalk or a cyclist speeding past you in traffic. I’ve even seen a few athletes sprint up Table Mountain as I huffed, puffed and perspired my way to the top. We like adventure and excitement. This makes the success of Scootours® no surprise.

If spending a few hours freewheeling down Signal Hill and the Mother City’s hillsides, or gliding across the Franschhoek Valley and enjoying the flourishing flora of the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve sounds good to you then you’ll love this exhilarating activity! The tours are led by a professional guide who takes you on an expedition of between 90 minutes and two hours, treating you to views very few have the privilege of every experiencing.

Designed by the Swiss to traverse the terrains of the Alps, the non-motorised locomotives are gravity propelled, making them eco-friendly. Two wide wheels are fastened to a compact frame, which makes the bike both sturdy and extremely easy to ride – if you can ride a bicycle then you should get along just fine on this scooter. Riders aged 10 years and older get their own scooter, while riders aged between 4 and 9 years must be accompanied by an adult.

It was while travelling in Switzerland that Scootours® Cape Town owner, Christiaan “Oudts” van Rheede van Oudtshoorn, noticed how versatile these scooters were and decided to bring the innovative concept to South Africa. The first of its kind in the country, Scootours® was established in the Drakensberg in 2012. The Cape Town branch of Scootours® opened in October 2015 and in Franschhoek in November 2016.

Scootours® offer scenic tours in Cape Town as well as in Franschhoek, where there are two touring options to choose from. A Family Tour takes the little ones into consideration as it features little slopes on the wine farms in the region, while an Adventure Tour is more challenging and designed for more daring travellers. On Sundays Scootours® run a weekly special that invites juniors (aged 4 to 9 years) to ride for free.

Throughout the trip riders are treated to breathtaking views and, since the scooter tour company operates all-year round, the fun doesn’t have to end because the weather changes.

NOTE: Scootours® Cape Town provides helmets, gloves and bottled water, but drivers and passengers MUST come in closed shoes, comfortable clothing and sunscreen.

Tip: You can be assured that there will be plenty of Kodak moments so bring along a camera. The tour guide will also be snapping some shots so carry R250 with you to purchase the images which will be emailed to you.
