Lazy lunches at Backsberg Wine Estate near Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands
There’s no shortage of wine farms in the Western Cape, but the trick is to find one where you can pass the time of day, any day, by enjoying a lunch that’s as lazy as it is lovely, either in a beautiful country garden during summer or indoors beside a roaring fire during winter.
Backsberg has a long and proud history of no-compromise winemaking and has developed gracefully into a sprawling family wine estate with a truly intoxicating spirit. Here, it’s about more than “just the wine”.
The idea is to make the overall dining experience, not just the food, as enjoyable as possible. A good bottle of Backsberg wine to go with your meal, together with great service and a relaxed leafy setting, all contribute to achieving this. A strong focus on consistency is at the core of Backsberg’s approach to how they run their restaurant, and the high number of local ‘regulars’ is testament to this.
Relax and enjoy tried-and-tested food made with fresh ingredients
From the moment you drive up the long acacia and oak tree-lined driveway, you’ll begin to realise that a lunch at Backsberg is undoubtedly a linger-longer affair. Pick a shaded table under the trees and settle in for a few hours!
The daytime-only restaurant operates every single day of the year, serving lunches and a varied a la carte menu that features traditional South African meals. You'll find Backsberg favourites on the wine list as well as a selection of special wines only available at the farm.
Kids will also feel right at home at Backsberg and can get rid of their energy on the swings and jungle gyms for the morning or afternoon while you enjoy the tranquillity of the uncluttered and lush garden setting.
Delectable delights and melodious music
During the week you can enjoy the likes of ostrich Carpaccio, smoked salmon stacks, seafood platters and an assortment of other delectable delights from Backsberg’s a la carte menu.
Sundays are the days that contribute the most to Backsberg’s restaurant’s reputation - their three course set menu includes a starter, lamb on the spit served with a buffet of salads, veggies and Linda's famous roast potatoes and a decadent desert. Traditional lamb on the spit is also available every day during summer, on Sunday's during winter and for special occasions of 10 or more people.
Cape Town guitarist Guy Feldman makes melodious music under a tree as the spit gently turns and the afternoon matures into a feast of fine food, wonderful wine and cordial times together with family and friends. The talented musician sets the scene for a long and lazy afternoon in the Cape Winelands.
The restaurant at Backsberg is available to cater for private parties and business functions, every day of the week and also caters for vegetarians. There is a beautiful wedding/function/conference venue that can accommodate 250-300 people as well, and also an historic vat cellar, which can hold 150.
A mid-week or weekend breakfast or lunch at the Backsberg restaurant is the perfect precursor or follow-up to an intriguing and fascinating Backsberg Wine Tasting.
Bookings highly recommended for weekends
