Things to do for the Day of Reconciliation in Cape Town

Recognise the past, celebrate the future and make the most of the Day on Reconciliation this year

On Saturday, 16 December 2017 we celebrate the day of reconciliation, a South African public holiday that was created to encourage unity and harmony among the country’s people.

Interestingly, the day has something of a controversial history. Originally known as the ‘Day of the Vow’, this date was once observed in commemoration of the Afrikaans Voortrekkers’ victory over the Zulu people at the Battle of Blood River in 1838. Much later, in 1961, the day gained further political significance as the official date on which the African National Congress (ANC) announced the founding of their military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation).

As such, 16 December marked great divide and difference for many years. However, after the 1994 democratic elections it retained its public holiday status but became a day centred on reconciliation in a bid to unite people across race, culture and creed, and to help settle past differences and lay down a promise for a unified future. Read more about the background of Day of Reconciliation.

In 2017 the Day of Reconciliation falls on a Saturday, and it happens to coincide with the unofficial start of the holiday season. So why not use this day to do something exciting… we’ve got some great suggestions.

RCS Gugulethu Reconciliation Day Race
The annual “Run for Unity” 10km race through Gugulethu is happening again this year to commemorate the slain Amy Biehl and the Gugulethu Seven. Runners will cruise (or sprint or jog!) through the streets of Gugs, past historical landmarks that pay tribute to those who lost their lives during apartheid. Wheelchairs and walkers are welcome. The race will end with a prize-giving ceremony at NY49 Stadium.

COST: Entry to the race is priced between R25/p to R80/p. Visit to register.

MCQP Presents Dungeons and Dragons
Currently in its 24th year, the annual MCQP costume party is well-known in Cape Town. This year’s theme is Dungeons and Dragons so come dressed to the nines in your Game of Thrones attire and get ready to cast magic spells and more as you dazzle and shine on 16 December 2017 at the Castle of Good Hope. The biggest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) event in Africa, this is one of the not-to-be-missed events on the Cape Town party calendar this season.

COST: Tickets are available via and with prices from R380/p.

Corona SunSets Festival
What better way to welcome summer than with a classic beach party. After the massive success of last year’s festival, Corona SunSets return to the Bungalow in Clifton for an electric evening of dance. International acts include Jonas Blue and Klingande, while some of the amazing local talent include Mi Casa, TIMO ODV, No Method, Da Capo, Strange Loving, Leighton Moody and more. Get ready to launch summer 2017/18 with a bang!

COST: Tickets are available via Nutickets with prices starting from R450/p.

Christmas Carols with Richard Cock at Oude Libertas Amphitheatre
Count down to Christmas by crooning along to carols! Sing-along enthusiasts don’t want to miss this night of memorable and magical Christmas songs performed by Richard Cock and Siyabonga Maqungo, together with the Wineland Festival choir, Festival Orchestra and hand-picked soloists. Taking place at the Oude Libertas Amphitheatre in Stellenbosch, this is just the thing to help you relax and take in all the joys of the most beautiful time of year.

COST: Tickets are available via Computicket for R220/p.

Hope@Paul Cluver: Karen Zoid
South Africa’s very own queen of rock, Karen Zoid, will be strutting her stuff at an evening of super-charged rock at Paul Cluver Wines in Elgin, as part of the Hope@Paul Cluver concert series in aid of the Thembalitsha Foundation. Expect Zoid’s energy and delicately rendered songs to dazzle and delight you at a stunning venue under the stars.

COST: Tickets are available via Computicket for R330/p.

Get Ready for the Return of the Most Amazing Show
For two nights only, Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 December 2017, Corne and Twakkie return to the stage to host The Most Amazing Show after a seven-year hiatus. ‘Believe it. Because it’s true”, they’re back complete with their signature moustaches and Hawaiian shirts, so expect an evening of hilarious skits and silly antics. The Glencairn Hotel in Simon’s Town will play host to this humorous duo. The evening kicks off at 7pm so be sure to get ready to laugh your socks off.

Cost: Tickets are available via Webtickets from R130/p - R150/p.

Runstacle… the obstacle course with a difference
This fun trail run featuring multiple obstacles is ideal for anyone looking for an hour of fun, rather than a hardcore hindrance course. It takes place at Cape Town Ostrich Ranch just 30 minutes from the CBD, and the Runstacle course is only 4km long so it is perfect for a quick jaunt. This adventure is great for young and old – all you require is a fun spirit as there will be plenty of good laughs, and comfy shoes. Look out for obstacles such as ‘pull up tyre’, ‘cargo net crawl’, ‘jump wall’ and more.

Cost: Tickets are available from Entryninja for R50/p.

A Summer’s Day with Great Beats at Tea in the Tree
For 13 hours,  stomp it out with lekker tunes as you get lost in the tranquil garden setting of Ridgemor Villa Guest House in Somerset West. Disco, electro, live acoustics and more will keep you entertained (and dancing!) throughout the day. The lush green garden features a pool giving you the chance to cool off in-between your dance sessions. Bring along your friends for one epic summer party.

Cost: Tickets are available from Nutickets for R250/p.

Reset Presents Techno Nights Supernova
Cape Town is known for having very diverse taste in music genres – not least of which is techno. Reset, located on the trendy Loop Street in the CBD, brings you a pumping night of techno on Saturday, 16 December. The venue boasts two dance floors and awesome lighting, thus the ideal setting for a great party. The line-up at Supernova includes two international DJs, namely LOCO & JAM from Ireland and Oscar L from Spain. What’s more, both these mix masters are making their debut in SA on the night. So let’s show them how we party in the Mother City!

Cost: Tickets are available from Nutickets from R150/p – R250/p.
