Dungeons is the name of the reef, just around the corner of The Sentinel in Houtbay, where the competition is held every year. A Dungeon is also one of those waves where one has to show the utmost respect or one suffers potentially fatal consequences.

Dungeon waves give you so many different take-off spots that all lure you into the demolition zone: the cold water, the high speed of the wave, the altitude and not to mention the kelp that may tangle you up on the inside and all those seals swimming around the line-up.

The situation at the Dungeons in Hout Bay is like the wave itself. There is a fine line between pleasure and pain. Once you paddle over the edge, you can be rewarded with one of the best waves of your life. This may involve a massive drop, a huge barrel and a good carve heading towards the end section.

On the other hand, you may end up going over the falls, receiving the thrashing of a lifetime. You might break your board, fall head back to the boat for a breather while focusing on what went wrong before having another dig....

Or you might bounce down a 25ft wave that is still growing while you're riding it...
