"David Poole and Dominic Peters are the Jazz musician-DJ-beat-freak-sonic surgeons behind Cape Town's Electro-Jazz sensation GOLDFISH.
In two short years South Africa's Goldfish have indelibly stamped their mark on electronic music, with a Nomination for SA's Best New Act in the Top Billing-Momentum Awards, opening for the Fat Boy Slim, The Audio Bullies, Mr Scruff and Stereo MC's, with tracks already appearing on compilations worldwide, and Number One Hits on 5fm, MatieFM, and KovsieFM as well as reaching number one on the SAMP3 Download Charts.
Goldfish have been hailed as the Re-invention of the DJ and their highly anticipated debut album, Caught in the Loop, was released in November 2005 to rave reviews, as well as brokering an international deal with UK based record label Black Mango Music.
Both accomplished multi-instrumentalists and jazz musicians in their own right, Dave and Dom have taken their grounding in jazz and broken boundaries on the dance floor combining samplers, saxophones, a groove box, keyboards, vocoder, electric double bass, flute and effect units into a spur-of-the moment, cutting-edge live remix performance.
When performing live, they are DJs so to speak, but with no predestined CD or Vinyl. Everything is created live, allowing a completely unique, spontaneous performance at every show. The album is a double-disc release consisting of a CD, as well as a DVD, which features a documentary\interview, and VJ set by the legendary group Iaminawe - mixing videos of Goldfish's live performance and animation to the sounds of the album".
JHBlive.com review: "Goldfish are a pretty unique phenomenon on the SA live music scene. While they are serious, heavy jazz musicians, and while they are undoubtedly a live act, the sounds they produce would more readily be associated with computers and turntables. Yes, Goldfish are a live electronic act, as much as that may sound like an oxymoron, and they consist of upright bassist Dominic Peters and saxophonist David Poole, along with various music-making toys and guest vocalists. The easiest comparison would be to St Germain, but that's misleading since Goldfish have their own sound".
Thunda.com review: "Five Stars for GOLDFISH... store that name in your memory for longer than 3 seconds, cause these guys are going places. The duo of David Poole and Dominic Peters, both members of jazz outfit "Breakfast Included" have put together a monster debut electronic album "Caught in the loop". Both artists come from a jazz background, studying Jazz at the University of Cape Town, but they've picked up some serious electronic skills along the way. Their combination of traditional jazz instruments such as upright Bass, flute and saxophones; with electronic devices such as samplers, a Groove box, vocoder and keyboards, results in a sound somewhere between jazz, house, electronica and down tempo chill out. All of which is topped with a distinct African flavour, setting them apart from other players in the genre".
Review in FHM magazine: "Take two Capetonians trained in Jazz, add some samplers, vocoders, keyboards, upright bass, flute and sax and you have got Goldfish, SA's finest new electro artists. David Poole and Dominic Peters manage to combine electro and live music into a beat-fest of uplifting, jazzy, chilled-out tunage. Comes with a DVD of trippy VJ effects. We dig these okes!"
The Goldfish Jazz musos, house head, funksters are onto something here. Combine gentle jazzy melodies, upbeat smoking house grooves and just a touch of blues along with simply gorgeous vocals and you're well... gonna find yourself caught in the loop! This debut album is a well crafted selection of down-tempo instrumentals, med-tempo breaks and four to the floor house grooves. Both Dom and Dave's musical class shine through with elements of Nu-Jazz and traditional African Jazz mixing brilliantly with bluesy Cafe jazz ala St Germain. But they're no copycats but originals. Goldfish has their own sound and it is wonderfully South African with the sophistication of Europe.
Dom also uses this thing called a theremin, which is a laser that alters the pitch and tone according to the position and angle of your hand in proximity to the beam. Did I mention there are only two of them? Go see a Goldfish live set, and then buy the CD Goldfish Live with the bonus DVD and the new Goldfish Album Perceptions of Pacha. You will thank me.
