In September 2005 they for instance performed in aid of the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation in Cape Town. The funds raised by this benefit concert went straight to this non-profit organization, which is determined to stem the tide of HIV and to give both patients and their loved ones hope. It is quite hard to imagine that FreshlyGround, made up of seven musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, had a slow start. They were formed in 2002, but it was only after the launch of their first album Jika Jika' in 2003 the Cape Town based band gained great success.
Two years later until now FreshlyGround is all over the show. Literally, that is, as there are only a few venues in South Africa this band hasn't performed. They have been the highlights of many concerts, festivals and other events in South Africa. They for instance played at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town, alongside icons as Miriam Makeba.
Whilst feeding the South African appetite for their music, FreshlyGround is working hard towards international fame as well. In 2004 and 2005 they performed in Zimbabwe, the United States of America, Japan, Rome, several festivals in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany.
In Cape Town they are a regular sight playing at Zula and The Baxter. Keep an eye out for the Appletizer concerts at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and regularly check out the events calendar of CapeTownMagazine.com.
FreshlyGround not only caught the hearts of the public. In April 2004 they performed at the opening of Parliament, on the eve of celebrating 10 years of South African democracy. In 2004 they grabbed the attention of movie star Nicholas Cage. He asked Freshlyground to play at his party in laid back Rafiki's, to celebrate the shooting of his movie Lord of War', partially shot in Cape Town.
Music makes the difference to a great holiday. CapeTownMagazine.com understands this. Therefore book our Arrival Package, which includes a CD of your choice, from this section.
The Arrival Package consists of 10 unique welcomes to Cape Town, inlcuding CD, Sim card and Airport Pick up (for 2 people): Only R495 for newsletter subscribers!
