The Mahogany Room jazz club

The new jazz club, The Mahogany Room, brings jazz back into the mother City

Finally Cape Town welcomes the soul of jazz back into the inner city.

Sometimes you discover or find a place and you think "this should never be featured anywhere because this is the most incredible 'real' place you can find". Sometimes is now again.

The Cape Town jazz club scene has looked a little meagre of the past few years, despite the fact that the Mother city plays host to one of the most celebrated Jazz festivals in the world: The Cape Town International Jazz Festival.

But we are so blessed with this new jazz club by the name of The Mahogany Room has all the potential to bring back the soul of [Cape Town infused] jazz into the city.

Being small, intimate, special and real, this venue has everything to become and stay the place where jazz lovers feel loved again.

The Mahogany Room is the result of 3 partners, Lawson Naidoo, Kesivan Naidoo and Lee Thomson coming together with a vision of creating an ideal home for jazz in Cape Town. A place where people can appreciate the immense talent our beautiful country has.

The Mahogany Room is based on the model of the worlds greatest jazz clubs, The Village Vanguard, Smalls and Ronnie Scotts.

Eric Alan said the following about The Mahogany Room:

Though the venue is small and one needs to book or get there early to ensure a seat. I fell in love with the venue from the downbeat, as an appreciator and lover of good music this is the place to listen to the musician performing, and it was gratifying to here punters shooshing people who were talking too loudly, this is a listener's venue, if you just want to party, drink and get loud, then rather find somewhere else to do that, the Perseverance Tavern is next door.

Finally there is a venue that pays respect to the performance on stage. Let all good music lover know about The Mahogany Room for soon the word is going to get out and musicians visiting from other parts of the world will want to head to and will probably jam with the band at the end of the evening."

The opening week featured The Feya Faku Quintet which consists of Top Cape Town jazz musicians Kesivan Naidoo, Buddy Wells, Mark Fransman, Shane Cooper and Lee Thomson. The opening night was on Tuesday 20th December 2011 with The Feya Faku Quintet playing for a great crowd from that Tuesday through to Friday.
