Tomorrowland Festival in South Africa

Not today or tomorrow: this mega electronic dance music festival may only come to Cape Town in 2017

Ever since September 2013, when it was first suggested that TomorrowWorld, the global version of Belgium’s mind-blowing Tomorrowland electronic dance music (EDM) festival, might be making its way to South Africa (SA) soon, the rumour mill has been spinning faster than a seamstress on speed. The main speculation has been that the mega-event will touch down on local shores in February 2016, but we’re here now to set things (somewhat) straight.

Truth is, the parties involved in bringing the party to Mzansi are still in negotiations, and we have it on good authority from a friend in the industry that if TomorrowWorld does journey to the rainbow nation, it definitely won’t be before 2017. Similarly, should it come, it will only sound off in Cape Town, not any other city. Aside from these two ‘facts’, the only thing that’s certain at the moment is that very little is certain at all.

So, pack away those glow sticks for now and stop checking ticket platforms hourly – it’s going to be a bit of a wait. The good news is that all the hoo-ha around the rumours has made it crystal clear to the international founders of Tomorrowland that South Africans are as eager as beavers to get down to the festival’s insane beats, so maybe, just maybe, that’ll push things along a little.

If the EDM master jol does finally manage to get to the Mother City, no doubt we can expect the same wild visuals and unrivalled line-up that make Belgium’s Tomorrowland one of the biggest and best electronic music affairs on the planet (the festivals usually feature around 300 DJs, including the likes of Armin van Buuren, Skrillex, David Guetta and Steve Aoki). Not to mention, it would help boost the local economy somewhat; the first international edition of the fair took place in Georgia in the US in September 2013 and it brought the state millions of dollars in tourism.

Aside from the American TomorrowWorld festivals, the event has also expanded to Brazil so it’s slowly moving south, which gives us some hope that one day the rumours might be turned into reality. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed that it’s closer to 2017 than later.
