City Scores Hat-Trick With HSBC Sevens Deal

Cecil Afrika is not the only one that’s scoring!

Last Updated: 08 December 2016

The City of Cape Town’s Council has approved a three-year contract for the Mother City to host the HSBC Cape Town sevens tournament.

This weekend’s rugby action can expect the support of a vast crowd, considering the success of the 2015 Cape Town sevens tournament. Councillor Eddie Andrews was full of praise for the BlitzBokke, returning home as leaders of the log following their triumph at the Dubai sevens tournament. Andrews also extended his welcome to the visiting teams and their staff.

This weekend, come as anything you want but don't come as yourself!

The 2015 inaugural event proved to be a resounding success. Over the two days, more than 106 000 spectators filled the Cape Town Stadium to witness the action-packed matches. The numbers brought in an estimated R539 million economic boost into local funds. Last year, the supporters profile consisted of 34% from Cape Town (local), 21% from the Western Cape excluding Cape Town, 22% from the rest of South Africa and 23% from other countries.

Roads around Cape Town Stadium will be closed temporarily to accommodate the number of fans making their way  to the games this weekend.

In addition, the City has put a detailed transport plan in place to facilitate the ease of movement to the stadium. Rugby fanatics are encouraged to make use of the MyCiti event shuttle that will depart from the Civic Centre bus station. This service will be free to event ticket holders only.
