Tribeca film festival Cape Town

Robert De Niro's famous New York film Festival looks to make a home in Cape Town

Hot off the press: espAfrika, the same organisation that organizes the Jazz Festival, has signed a five year agreement to host the Cape Town edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, starting in 2013.

What is the Tribeca Film Festival?

The original Tribeca Film Festival was founded by Robert de Niro after 9/11 to promote the cultural and economic revival of the Lower Manhattan neighbourhood situated in the triangle below Canal Street (abbreviated as Tribeca).

With the support of American Express, Tribeca Film Festival was also created in an effort to bring the best independent films to more audiences and individuals in new ways.

The event provides a platform for innovative filmmakers to showcase their latest work. The 2012 program in NYC will feature films of all genres: crowd-pleasing blockbusters-to-be, provocative documentaries, foreign films, shorts and free outdoor screenings, plus a cornucopia of panel discussions and lectures, with the likes of Robert DeNiro, Martin Scorsese, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn and Ron Howard.

The festival also claims a strong training and development component, which local Cape Town film makers can take advantage of to get a leg-up in the competitive movie industry.
