New Year’s Day in Cape Town and Surrounds

Restaurants, eateries and wine estates open on the first day of 2017

Last Update: December 9, 2016

While New Year’s Day in Cape Town tends to be a time of reflection, relaxation and recovery – especially if a raucous New Year’s Eve party was on the cards – for others it’s a period of celebration.

The divide dates back to when slavery was commonplace in South Africa. Most servants were denied a day off on 1 January, and thus they started their new year of the second day of January. However, slavery and servitude has long since been abolished in Mzansi and all South Africans revel in the coming of the New Year on the right day.

On 1 January, beaches, parks and greenways are typically jam-packed as families, friends and lovers make merry beneath Cape Town’s sunny skies. Be warned though, the crowds that gather for these celebration can be both daunting and unpredictable. So, if you are planning on celebrating outdoors, or amongst large groups of people, please take care to look after your possessions and keep an eye out for your friends and family.

But, if you’re looking for a way to ease into 2016 (and avoid our pretty city’s beaches, parks and greenways), consider a delicious meal at one of the following restaurants in Cape Town and surrounds (they’re all open on 1 January 2016).

RESTAURANTS & WINE ESTATES OPEN ON NEW YEAR’S DAY 2016

Dornier’s Bodega Restaurant
Those of you partying it up in Stellenbosch this New Year’s Eve won’t have to trek all the way back to the city to find a scrumptious meal. Spend the afternoon in the Winelands at Bodega Restaurant on the rolling hills of Dornier Wines and enjoy fresh farm fare. Their summer lunch menu is light, fun and flavourful – think Asian pork belly, fresh local trout fishcakes and a creamy mussel pot – but if you’re not feeling all that adventurous, you can always stick with old favourites, like a gourmet sirloin burger. If you didn’t have too much of a crazy night, try something from their cellar. Alternatively, nurse yourself back to wellness with a round of tapas later in the day.
New Year’s Day Opening Hours: Lunch: 12pm – 4pm | Tapas: 4pm – 7pm

Lucky for you (and your buddies), The River Club is open the whole day on 1 January 2016, giving you ample time to find that sweet spot and sink the putt. What’s more, the golf course sports its very own Slug & Lettuce restaurant – a firm favourite among club members. The eatery boasts both an indoor and outdoor seating area so guests can enjoy views of the lush practice golf course while tucking into a variety of hearty meals including their award winning burgers and hand crafted pizzas.

The meal includes succulent skewered meat and a choice of home-baked bread, seasonal salads and roast vegetables on a pay-per-weight harvest table. What’s more, the hip winery is somewhat famous for its uber-trendy wine cocktails and cutting-edge interior, which includes a vast and beautiful veranda.  Best of all though, the New Year’s Day nosh is incredibly affordable. Vino lovers can also make sure they sample the fruits of the local vine at the wine tastings. The entire facility will be open on New Year’s Day.
