New Year’s Day in Cape Town and Surrounds
Restaurants, eateries and wine estates open on the first day of 2017
Last Update: December 9, 2016
While New Year’s Day in Cape Town tends to be a time of reflection, relaxation and recovery – especially if a raucous New Year’s Eve party was on the cards – for others it’s a period of celebration.
The divide dates back to when slavery was commonplace in South Africa. Most servants were denied a day off on 1 January, and thus they started their new year of the second day of January. However, slavery and servitude has long since been abolished in Mzansi and all South Africans revel in the coming of the New Year on the right day.
On 1 January, beaches, parks and greenways are typically jam-packed as families, friends and lovers make merry beneath Cape Town’s sunny skies. Be warned though, the crowds that gather for these celebration can be both daunting and unpredictable. So, if you are planning on celebrating outdoors, or amongst large groups of people, please take care to look after your possessions and keep an eye out for your friends and family.
But, if you’re looking for a way to ease into 2016 (and avoid our pretty city’s beaches, parks and greenways), consider a delicious meal at one of the following restaurants in Cape Town and surrounds (they’re all open on 1 January 2016).

Their summer lunch menu is light, fun and flavourful – think Asian pork belly, fresh local trout fishcakes and a creamy mussel pot – but if you’re not feeling all that adventurous, you can always stick with old favourites, like a gourmet sirloin burger. If you didn’t have too much of a crazy night, try something from their cellar. Alternatively, nurse yourself back to wellness with a round of tapas later in the day.
