Coach of Bafana Bafana
South African national team welcome back Carlos Alberto Parreira before 2010 World Cup
A few days after Joel Santana bid farewell to Bafana Bafana, Kickoff.com broke the news that Carlos Alberto Parreira is returning as head coach of Bafana Bafana running up to the FIFA 2010 World Cup. Now with only months to go before the 2010 World Cup kicks off, Parreira’s re-appointment will serve to be a crucial point for Bafana.
Brazilian-born Santana resigned on Monday 19 October 2009 after he met with the SAFA management committee. The 60-year-old led South Africa to a respectable fourth place finish at the Confederations Cup in 2009 but since then the team's form has slipped alarmingly.
Santana succeeded fellow Brazilian Carlos Alberto Parreira in April 2008 to take over the reins of the Bafana Bafana national team. Parreira, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 1994, has his work cut out for him to get the team World Cup ready.
As host of the FIFA 2010 World Cup the South African team are determined to field a strong side in the world cup.
Parreira is the 17th appointment as Bafana head coach in 17 years since South Africa was re-admitted as a member of world controlling body FIFA.
