High Five Kite Surf School

Learn how to kitesurf in Cape Town

Conquer the world’s hottest adrenalin sport with lessons from High Five Kitesurf, Surf & S.U.P school

TIP-OFF: High Five is a good friend of CapeTownMagazine.com; in fact, they offer all our readers great deals on their kitesurfing and stand up paddle board lessons!

Kitesurfing’s popularity has soared to dizzying heights since its inception in the late 1990s, and Cape Town, as usual, is hot on trend. No surprises there though. In the Mother City, wind and water are looked upon with godliness, and waves and swells are regarded with the same piety usually afforded to sacraments and holy rites.

Not to mention, with its warm weather, consistent wind, large variety of kitesurf spots and only moderately busy beaches, the Mother City makes for an optimal kiting destination, both for beginners and those enthusiasts looking to master new tricks, achieve bigger airs and learn to manoeuvre atop larger waves and over flatter water.

Countless schools have cropped up along Cape Town’s 300-km coastline to cater to the throngs of thrill seekers looking to get hooked on the extreme sport, but among the lot, the Table View-based High Five Kitesurf, Surf & S.U.P is distinguishing itself by offering a handful of one-of-a-kind services alongside its basic beginner courses and more advanced/intermediate specialised skills clinics.

For one, the school is the only International Kitesurfing Organisation (IKO) approved joint that’s qualified to offer IKO instructor training courses. People from across the world head to High Five to learn the ins and outs of tutoring, and in turn, the school boasts a collection of worldly and experienced teachers.

Similarly, the learning hub also runs two beachside surf hostels in Cape Town’s kiteboard meccas of Blouberg and Big Bay: Endless Summer Beachhouse and The Mystic House. Meaning, you can roll out of bed and be out on the water for a morning session faster you can say ‘chip roll’ or ‘rad boost, bru’.

Not to mention, the institution is open seven days a week (“as long as the wind is blowing”) and offers lessons at any time of the day. Lessons are conducted at Kitebeach in English, but by arrangement, the school can teach in German, Dutch, French or Spanish (simply call in advance to book).

Finally, the school is the only one that offers downwind shuttles, which means that kitesurfers who don’t want to carve back the way they came, can pay a small fee to get dropped off and picked up between Sunset and Haakgat beaches.

High Five Kitesurfing Beginner Lessons

Even newbies looking to ‘boost like a pro’ need to start somewhere, so High Five offers a five-step beginner course ideal for learners looking to learn fast and to learn safe. Limited to two persons, the intimate lessons teach future kiters all the basics – like equipment set-up, land-based flying, self-launch, body-dragging and simple board skills – as well as give athletes a supervised riding tutorial during which they can learn tips about changing direction and holding an edge.

The team recommends starting with a two-hour introduction to see if you like it, and then ultimately booking the three-day course – after which you’ll know all you need to practice safely on your own.

High Five also provides all the equipment you’ll need to get going, from boards and kites to wetsuits and harnesses (included in the cost of the lessons).

Note: If weather conditions are not suitable at Kite Beach in Bloubergstrand, lessons will take place at the Langebaan Lagoon.

To Book: Send an email or call (details in info block top right or below the feature). Or simply drop by the shop. Before you know it, you'll be hooked.

High Five Kitesurfing Intermediate/Advanced Lessons

For those who’ve already become full-fledged kiting addicts, High Five also offers plenty of super kiff specialised skill sessions ideal for feeding any fix.

It’s possible to book one-on-one two-hour refresher courses if you’re looking to brush up on basics or take your game to the next level, or for those serious competitors, clinics – both wave and freestyle – are lead throughout the year by legends like Ruben Lenten, Kevin Langeree and Lewis Crathern.

The intermediate courses include a ride with a kitesurfing instructor who will demonstrate examples and monitor your efforts on a 6km downwind course from Sunset Beach to Kite Beach. You will get coached on jumping technique, wave riding, transitions and advanced freestyle moves.

Note: If weather conditions are not suitable at Kite Beach in Bloubergstrand, lessons will take place at the Langebaan Lagoon.

To Book: Send an email or call (details in info block top right or below the feature). Or simply drop by the shop. Before you know it, you'll be hooked.

High Five Kitesurfing Board & Equipment Rental
On par with making a down payment on a car, investing in kitesurfing equipment is a serious financial outlay. While the price of boards is highly variable (most ring in at more or less R7500), kites will run you as much as a sweet R14,000; though, the good news is that High Five sells last year’s equipment at a 50% discount.

Regardless though, for those still unsure about their commitment to the sport or simply for those confronted by a goose egg in the ol’ bank balance, renting is a welcome alternative.

High Five offers RRD Religion kites, South African developed and tested gear, for the kite lessons and daily or weekly rentals. The school has complete sets – including the kite, bar and board – as well as Mystic wetsuits and Mystic harnesses in a variety of sizes and styles.

High Five Tandem Kitesurfing Experience
This option is great for those who would rather dip their feet into the water to feel the kitesurfing ‘temperature’ first before diving in.

Here's an idea of what you can expect:

Adventurers simply get on the board and kite surf their way across the waters, without having to go through the rigorous training steps. A qualified IKO guide will ensure that all the technical details are taken care of, meaning that all a surfer needs to do is enjoy the ride.

In short, it is a great way for people of all ages and skill levels to experience the thrill of riding the waters. High Five is the only kitesurfing school in the Mother City that offers this tandem option.

Note: The minimum age requirement for tandem kitesurfing is 10 years; the minimum weight is 40kg while the maximum weight is 100kg.

To Book: Send an email or call (details in info block top right or below the feature). Or simply drop by the shop.

Not to mention, the High Five folks are happy to negotiate. Simply give them a call, and they’ll see what they can work out for you.
