Kirstenbosch Plant Fair
*The 2017 Kirstenbosch Plant Fair has been cancelled
Celebrate the distinctive scents and fragrances of our diverse plant species at this year’s Kirstenbosch Plant Fair, taking place at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden on Saturday, 13 and Sunday, 14 May 2017. The theme for the floral fiesta is ‘Amazing Aromatics’ and as such, the spotlight will be placed on those plants that proudly emit natural perfumes.
Delight your sense of smell and explore the hugely diverse scents from some of our indigenous flora. This aromatic journey will also raise funds for the development of this world-class botanical garden and will present a unique opportunity for guests and green-fingered gardeners to purchase some of the rare and aromatic plants from Kirstenbosch’s Plant Production Nursery.
This year, two other botanical gardens (the Karoo Garden in Worcester and the Harold Porter Garden in Betty’s Bay) will also bring some of their special flora for you to enjoy. Professional horticulturalists and experienced gardeners will be on-hand to give advice to guests who are keen to learn more about indigenous plant species. Other independent plant wholesalers, boutique nurseries and individual hobbyists will also be selling their special selections of aromatic indigenous flowers and endangered plants to the guests.
Smells and sweet scents are not the only sensory treats on offer; tickle your taste buds with some delicious culinary creations that use flowers and aromas to enhance the flavour. Think craft gins that use the enduring scents of fynbos, or savoury snacks that employ the essence of herbs and flowers. The tastes and smells at the Kirstenbosch Plant Fair will take you on a sensory trip to utopia.
Other products on offer at the fair include gardening equipment, fynbos-inspired arts and crafts, compost (particularly Kirstenbosch’s secret “home brew”) and an array of other food and drink items. The Kirstenbosch Plant Fair is a family-friendly affair with supervised play sections for your beloved children and plenty of space in the vast gardens to relax and soak up the Capetonian sun.
A comprehensive 60-page Kirstenbosch Plant Fair handbook will be available for purchase at a mere R30, which includes a map of the fair and an impressive compendium of local plants and advice on how to garden effectively during this drought period. If you’re looking to add some green to your garden, or simply love the sweet smells of scented flowers, then this event is perfect for you.
