For decades, locals and tourists alike flock to the CBD for the annual tradition of witnessing the official switch-on of the festive lights in Adderley Street. On Sunday, 14 December 2014, attendees can look forward to seeing Executive Mayor Alderman Patricia de Lille flip the switch and brighten up South Africa’s historic main pathway and kick-start the festive season with a bang! As always, there will loads of festive flavour to get you in the mood for the holiday season.

Kirstenbosch Carols by Candlelight (18 – 21 December)
Hark the herald angels sing! Hear some of Cape Town’s angelic voices at this annual festive event at the Kirstenbosch Gardens from Thursday, 18 to Sunday, 21 December 2014. Running for more than two decades and organised by the Rotary Club as a fundraising initiative, the family-friendly Carols by Candlelight is an institution on the festive calendar and a prime opportunity to experience the greenway on a warm Cape Town summer evening. Guests wanting to attend the sing-along can look out for stellar performances from the show’s main attraction, the legendary Cape Town Concert Brass and Male Voice Choir, as well as from a series of pre-entertainment acts. Visitors can purchase some light nibbles, and alcohol will be allowed into the venue as long as bottles remain concealed as it is a family event. No littering will be tolerated.

Christmas at Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch
Celebrate Christmas in Stellenbosch this year at one of the Cape Winelands region’s oldest establishments. The Spier Wine Farm is pulling out all the stops and corks to put forth a festive experience to cater to all pockets, times and tastes. Christmas Day Kayaking Session with Kaskazi Kayaks in Cape Town
See Cape Town from a different angle this Christmas Day in the Mother City and head out onto the glassy waters of Table Bay for a festive paddle with Kaskazi Kayaks. Whether it’s an early morning session or a post-feast workout, the Mother City-based adventure tour is offering merrymakers an alternative Xmas experience. Christmas on Table Mountain
This year Santa Claus and his Christmas Faeries decided to not descend into dingy, dusty and dark chimneys, but rather to head to the top of Table Mountain. That’s right boys and girls, the jolly ol’ man from the North Pole is bringing festive cheer to one of the one of the world’s ‘New7Wonders of Nature’. Santa and his crew will visit Table Mountain on Christmas Eve between 10:30am and 12:30pm and on Christmas Day between 10:30am and 2:30pm. Kiddies who make it the top of Cape Town’s largest landmark will each receive an activity book that is not only jam-packed with information on the fauna and flora on the mountain but also has a super fun treasure hunt that is sure to keep the young ones (and the young at heart) entertained. What’s more, visitors to the Table Mountain Café can look forward to a special Christmas menu from Monday, 22 to Sunday, 28 December 2014. Not to mention, the cableway has arranged an assortment of entertainment, including puppet shows, games and magic acts to keep the guests entertained while they wait for their turn to board the revolving cable car; the entertainers are scheduled to perform daily between 8:30am and 12:30pm from Friday, 26 December 2014 to Sunday, 4 January 2015. And finally, there will be FREE short guided walks from the Twelve Apostles Terrace (below the Shop at the top and the Table Mountain Café) that depart on the hour from 9am to 3pm.
COST: Tickets for the cable car can be bought online via Webtickets.co.za (there is an option to select a date) or at the cableway ticket office. Prices range from R58p/p to R300p/p, depending on age, time of the day and whether or not it is a return trip.
