10 FREE Ways to Celebrate Your Birthday in Cape Town
If it’s your birthday and you love getting free stuff, this is the list for you!
Last Updated: 23 June 2017
With my birthday coming up, it seemed appropriate to scour the internet for 10 of the finest free things to do in celebration of my day of becoming a fully-fledged human upon this Earth. I’m not the biggest birthday fan, mostly because I’m starting to cultivate wrinkles and carbs are now to my body what red berets are to JZ. Also, adulting is hard. But with promises of cable car trips, cheesecake slices, bubbles and burgers on the cards, I may reconsider my aversion to celebrating the day I burst forth into this world.
1. Free Cable Car Trip Up Table Mountain
Every year I say I’m going to take advantage of this special, but I have yet to actually capitalise on a free trip to the top of the Table. 2015 is the year, and I plan to have my ID in my hot little hand the moment I’m off the clock at 5pm. I’ll be first in line for the evening trip and I’m going to drag my lovely boyfriend with me – luckily there’s a sunset special on concurrently, which means his ticket will be half price after 6pm. We’ll have a romantic evening swooning over astonishing views of the city, while sipping champers and taking endless pics. I have it all planned out, so the dicey Mother City weather had better co-operate.
2. Complimentary Birthday Beverage at JC Brasserie & Pub
If it’s your birthday, mosy over to this cosy locale in Newlands for a meal to the value of at least R80 and get a free drink as a reward for your years on Earth. JC (the ‘JC’ literally stands for ‘Just Chilling’) understands that birthday means a party, so this is a little something to help it along. Designed in the style of a traditional pub (with a contemporary edge), this place has a miscellaneous array of heartwarming menu items, from salads and chili poppers to burgers, pub grub dishes like Bangers ‘n’ Mash and lamb chops. Their gourmet burger toppings are a must-try and include Bloody Mary salsa or a blue cheese & fig combo. What’s more, they have a smorgasbord of cocktail jars to treat diners! Be sure to bring your ID along, though.
Alternatively, you can enjoy…
A Free Meal at Knife Restaurant
This smart American-style smokehouse in Century City offers a free meal to birthday ladies or gents who host a party for eight or more guests at the restaurant on any Saturday in their birthday month. You just have to present proof of your birth date. I’m definitely opting for Knife’s famous smoked sticky BBQ baby back pork ribs.
3. Free Coffee from Vida e Caffé
If you sign up for a Vida loyalty card (which is also free), you’re entitled to a steaming cup of delicious dark-bean goodness to kick-start your birthday. As a person somewhat incapable of functioning without caffeine, this is a bon anniversaire treat that I’m eagerly anticipating.
4. Free Cheesecake Slice from the Piano Bar
Did someone say free cheesecake? Great, I’m there. The Piano Bar is all about spoiling guests with good music and fine food, and if it’s your birthday you get this scrumptious dessert for free after your meal.
5. 50% Off Your Treatment at Sorbet
Alright, so it’s not free per se, but it’s still a super deal and an excuse to treat yo'self. If you sign up for Sorbet’s loyalty card and choose a treatment worth R200 or more, you get it for half the price! Someone sign me up for the Power Mani please, I’m living my best life.
6. Free Body Shop R50 Gift Voucher
Another nifty gift for loyalty card holders, Body Shop devotees get a R50 gift voucher to celebrate another year of getting older. This year, mine shall contribute to anti-wrinkle eye cream.
7. Free Hug
We all have those people in our life who always answer the 'what do you want for your birthday question' with the adorable but not helpful answer, 'a hug.' I'm not one of those people. Yes, hugs are nice; but so are presents. Presents are very nice.
8. Free Movie at Ster Kinekor
OK, you have to work for this one a bit. If you sign up for a loyalty card and watch 15 movies in a year, you’ll be upgraded to a fancy-schmancy VIP card that entitles you to a free movie on your birthday. I’m not 100% sure I can fit watching 15 movies into the two weeks before my grey hair jubilee, but it’s a goal to aspire to for next year.
9. Free Ice Cream at Spur
Granted, one does have to sit through the very loud, very public and very happy-clappy Spur birthday song to score said ice cream, but in the cost-benefit calculation, benefit comes out tops. You do still get a sparkler when you’re over the age of 10 don’t you? Note to self: must find out.
I think I’ve won the ‘best birthday ever’ competition already, without having actually celebrated my birthday yet. The question is now whether I can fit that entire list into one day – I shall get back to you on that. For now, I wish my fellow ageing Sagittarians much love, freedom and goodwill – remember to have your IDs on you to take advantage of these specials.
10. Hit the Beach in Your Bathing (Not Birthday) Suit
The simple joy of feeling sand crunching between your toes and breathing in the fresh sea breeze is priceless- literally. Cape Town has got to have some of the most gorgeous sandy spots in the world and you needn’t pay a cent for a visit to your favourite beach.
While this is generally a summery venture, winter babies shouldn’t feel left out.Gathering your maatjies together and going to watch the sunset as you huddle on a picnic blanket is lovely regardless of the season. Let’s be honest, how often do you actually take a dip in our freezing ocean when you go to the beach anyway? Sneak a few bottles of bubbly and vino and you’ve got yourself a ready-made birthday party by the sea.
