Latitude33 in Cape Town

It’s on the map: where exclusive Aussie clothing, killer cuisine and exquisite art meet

When you sit around sharing enough drinks with a friend that you’ve known since your knee-high days, you talk a lot of smack and you start to come up with a lot of ideas. When it comes to the latter, some are great, some are bad, some are Nobel Prize-worthy...until the next morning’s hangover, but most of the time, you hardly remember any of them.

After a night on the town, childhood mates and Johannesburg natives Gareth Walford and Charles Post did one better. They not only remembered their little light bulb – they acted on it. What followed is Latitude 33, a stylish Bree Street clothing shop. And restaurant. And coffee house. And art gallery.

“We didn’t set out to be pretentious and we didn’t do this to try to be different,” explains Gareth. “We just wanted to do the things we like the best we could and we wanted to create a space where people can comfortably spend the whole day.”

And so, amidst a torrent of hybrid venue launches, they opened their little multi-purpose city centre gem in 2013 to be the kind of relaxed place where you can do some work (there’s free unlimited Wi-fi), meet people over excellent cappuccinos, eat, shop or even improve your cultural quotient (cue the art).

Unlike so many of the schizophrenic little shops that came to populate the CBD during this time, they weren’t going out of their way to cater to the Cape’s creative cult with a unique take on cross-pollination. Rather, they were simply focussing on perfecting their passions.

From Gareth’s side, that meant turning out mouth-watering meals. The award-winning chef cut his teeth at some of Johannesburg’s top five-star hotels, where he sharpened his skills and discovered he had a knack for translating what he learned in the fine dining world into the kind of fare the ‘man on the street’ could enjoy.

Latitude 33 serves what Gareth calls “everyday people food” for breakfast and lunch: think morning eats like eggs Benedict and ‘The Morning After’ (a spicy tomato based chorizo, sausage and bean stew topped with poached eggs served with toast) and mid-day meal options like gourmet burgers and hearty salads. In short, don’t expect a peppering of microgreens over your meal, pea shoots or any of those other things that you send back on a side plate at a fancy restaurant. Of course, there are also quite a few more intricate signature dishes, like the pork belly sandwich, pulled pork tacos and the salmon potato cakes, that are approachable but undoubtedly the offspring of Gareth’s haute cuisine pedigree.

Charles, on the other hand, is responsible for the look and feel of the space and for putting together the upstairs boutique, a store that offers apparel that you won’t find anywhere else in the city. Inspired by a trip to Bali, he set out to bring the island’s ‘big wave’ mentality back with him, and it’s no more evident than in the massive wooden swell that’s forever suspended, seconds before the point of breaking, above the coffee bar.

Downstairs, alongside the gnarly wave sculpture, authentic surfboards and black-and-white photographs of beach bums and bunnies line the walls, and light wood tables and booths intermingle with plush leather couches (two of which sit next to a fireplace).  Upstairs, there’s more of the same – only the din of a bustling eatery is exchanged for the mellow soundtrack of the second-storey clothing shop.

This is Charles’s playground, and together with fiancé and British portrait artist Olivia Franklin, he’s created a store that’s now the exclusive Cape Town stockist of sought-after Australian men’s and women’s brands. But that doesn’t mean you should be picturing oversized T-shirts plastered with assaulting labels – Billabong anyone?

“We source standout pieces,” Olivia further explains, “the kind of clothes that you could wear to a Cape Town festival.” Think stylish, one-of-a-kind boho-chic items, like woven cardigans that deteriorate into a fringe, cosy jumpers emboldened with a shock of colour at the sleeve-ends, acid-washed denim jackets with an 80s puffiness, trendy button-ups brandishing Navajo prints, hip high-waisted shorts and pants and more.

The pair also make a point to only source one, maybe two, of a particular garment in each size, so anyone who makes a purchase can pretty much be guaranteed that they’ll be one of only a tiny handful of Mother City owners.

Though not from a fashion background, Olivia has the kind of discerning eye unique to artists, and if you need proof of her ability, it’s simply a matter of checking out the incredible portraiture hanging on the wall opposite the apparel. She paints people she meets on the bustling Mother City streets, and her funky take on the Cape’s characters are always on display in Latitude’s second-storey exhibition space of sort – they’re also for sale.

So whether you’re on the hunt for a new addition to your wall or wardrobe or are keen to simply unwind with a cuppa, some chow and a good book, Latitude 33 seems to be the all-in-one-location where just about everything’s at your fingertips.

Tip: Although Latitude 33 is only regularly open for breakfast and lunch, it does take private function bookings in the evenings. So if you’re interested in hosting a special dinner or event, give Gareth or Charles a call to see what’s possible.

The Bill: Prices are pretty reasonable; expect to pay anything from R25 to R90 for a breakfast and from R40 and R120 for a lunch dish. The exclusive range of clothing is priced accordingly.
