Young Saturdays at Bay Harbour Market

The new Young Saturdays programme at the Bay Harbour Market promises hours of creative fun for their youngest visitors

One of our favourite weekend markets, the Bay Harbour Market at 31 Harbour Road, Hout Bay, now just upped its appeal a couple of notches with the introduction of their Young Saturdays kids programme!

Even though the indoor market has always encouraged family fun, having the kids run wild around a space with more than 100 stalls can be a bit of a nightmare for parents! Fret no more because Bay Harbour Market’s  Young Saturdays programme is designed to keep kids entertained, amused and creatively stimulated while mom and dad enjoy a leisurely browse around, and a bite to eat.

Expect an array of fun activities, which start at 10:30am every Saturday and run throughout the day. Every Saturday, young visitors to the Bay Harbour Market can look forward to face painting, a clown that promises lots of laughs and giggles, the making of balloon animals, and various art classes and demonstrations that takes fantastical storytelling to a whole new level. There will also be magicians with a couple of tricks up their sleeves, and creative activities that include pizza dough sculpting and cooking classes specifically geared to what the little ones enjoy most. We can’t think of a better way to keep the kids  engaged while mom and dad browse the stalls. And the best of all is that participation is completely free!

The first session of Young Saturdays at Bay Harbour Market featured a DIY baking class for the little ones, facilitated by Gigi, The Banting Baker. Gigi –who also spoils market goers with her delicious sweet treats every weekend – worked alongside the kids at  the market as they baked and decorated their own cupcake. All the ingredients used are sugar-, wheat- and gluten-free, so that little bakers with special dietary requirements can bake their cake and eat it!

“We like to think of the entire market as one giant playground. We know kids would enjoy some age-specific activities that also free parents up for some stress- and guilt-free shopping”, says General Manager Sandra Stroebel, who personally curates the kids programme.

For kids who might not want to be part of a class full of other kids, the Bay Harbour Market offers a variety of kid-specific stalls including Lucky Duck Toys, J.Beenz funky kids’ fashion, hair braiding, henna tattoos, and Cynthia’s for African-inspired clothes. What’s more,  the Bay Harbour Market also offers yummy sweet treats that kids will love too, including delights from Nap Living, Iced Dream, and The Wicked Waffle.

Tip: Parking can be found on the pavement, outside Sinnfull Ice-Cream on Harbour Road, or behind Snoekies fisheries. Also, if you’re car-less, keep in mind that the MyCiTi’s bus 108 stops just outside the market.
