Winter Foraging and Fermentation Events with Veld and Sea

Pick your own produce and learn about the latest craze in organic foods – fermentation!

One of the latest trends in the sustainable food industry is wild food and foraging. Capetonians have already picked up on the craze with events such as the Fynbos Forage and Feast taking place in July 2016. One company, called Veld and Sea, are punting the lifestyle with various winter events taking place in the Western Cape until August, and you are welcome to tag along and see what it’s all about.

Foraging is all about reconnecting with nature and using what food the forests and fynbos naturally provide. However, it is important to be educated and knowledgeable about what is edible, and what could kill you. Enter Veld and Sea, who will be running foraging events and workshops that will hopefully inspire you to get out there and start finding your own food without having to break the bank at the local supermarket.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 WINTER FORAGING EVENTS WITH VELD AND SEA

MUSHROOM FORAGING: Join the team on Saturday, 6 August and Thursday, 11 August 2016 for a winter mushroom forest forage and learn about the wonders of wild mushrooms. Included in the excursions are notes, recipes and mushroom-based snacks afterwards. The location of the mushroom hunt will be revealed closer to the time.

FYNBOS FORAGING: There will be two Fynbos Foraging excursions in the Good Hope Gardens Nursery in Cape Point; one on Saturday, 13 August, and the other on Saturday, 27 August 2016. This half-day course will let you explore and pick edible floral foods and fresh organic vegetables from the bountiful fynbos in the area. You will also receive wild food snacks and drinks, a delicious three-course lunch based on ingredients you hand-picked, harvested and prepared. You will also be able to take home information sheets and recipes on the plants that were used in the meal, as well as two indigenous edible pot plants.

MALCHEMY FERMENTABLES: Just as foraging is gaining momentum, so too is fermentation. Join Zayaan Khan on Sunday, 7 August and Saturday, 20 August 2016, for an interactive and tantalising fermentation workshop at the Veld and Sea foraging classroom. You will be able to taste and create some incredible ferments, such as a vegetable and wild herb drink, or homemade sodas and tonics that will take your G&Ts to a new level. You will also learn about microorganisms and homemade cleaners and hair conditioners – all of which can be made from the fruits and vegetables that you would normally throw away. Space is limited to 12 people per workshop, so book soon to secure a spot.
