Wings for Life World Run Cape Town

Support spinal cord research and be a part of this global charity race that’s taking place simultaneously on six continents

Join legions of runners across the globe for the 2015 Wings for Life World Run – a race set to challenge thousands of athletes to pound the ground at the exact same time in 35 different locations on six continents. The charity competition is on Sunday, 3 May 2015, and the Cape Town leg starts at Boschendal Wine Estate near the Franschhoek Valley.

Hosted to raise funds for research to cure spinal cord injury, the worldwide event is not a conventional long distance run. Instead of chasing a finish line, runners will be trying to keep ahead of official catcher cars that will accelerate at determined intervals. Once the car catches up to the competitor, the athlete’s race is over and they can return to the start area for celebrations. This will be happening in multiple time zones across the continents, and as the pace quickens, participants will be eliminated until one man and one woman are left standing as global champions of the Wings for Life World Run.

The overall winners will score a round-the-world trip, and the last man and woman standing in each location will get to choose a country where they want to run for the following year’s event. All the proceeds will be going to Wings for Life, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to find a cure for spinal cord injury.

In 2014 an astonishing 35 397 runners took part in the global race and this year promises to be just as big. Last year, 35-year-old Coolboy Ngamole claimed the South African title by completing 59.84 kilometres before being caught by the catcher car – maybe you could be the one to beat his record this year! You could also find yourself running alongside larger-than-life South African personalities such as Ryan Sandes, Vanessa Haywood, James Dalton, Gugu Zulu, Hlubi Mboya, Pieter du Preez and Zuki Nzo! You best bring your A-game otherwise you may be caught by Dakar Rally champ Giniel de Villiers, the fast and furious catcher car driver for South Africa in 2015 – watch him training in the video below:

Another development for 2015 is the partnership between the Wings for Life Spinal Cord Research Foundation and the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation to further the excellent work of Dr Harkema in the field of epidural stimulation to recover automatic control for individuals living with spinal cord injuries. A significant amount of the money raised from the 2014 race will go towards funding this treatment for eight special patients.

South African participants are lucky enough to be competing in the scenic Cape Winelands, and the route will be passing the now iconic Drakenstein Correctional Centre where former president Nelson Mandela spent the last few years of his 27-year long jail term.  Pretty much anyone can participate, as long as they are older than 18 and can manage to do a bit of long distance running. So if you’re up for it, why not join fellow fitness fanatics from Australia to Alanya (Turkey) for a unique marathon and a chance to support a worthwhile cause?

If you’re a wheelchair athlete then you can also take part this year. Please note that you need to own a regular wheelchair that you can move yourself or be pushed in by a friend, and it needs to have two drive wheels at the back, two small wheels at the front and two push rings and breaks.
