The ABSA Currie Cup kicks off on Friday, 7 August 2015, with our local boys playing the Griquas in Kimberley. However, die-hard fans of DHL Western Province won’t have to wait long to see their local favourites live in action at the Newlands Stadium. DHL Western Province will go head-to-head with the Free State Cheetahs on Saturday, 15 August 2015 in what will be the first home-game for the team this season. If you can’t make it to the stadium, why not shout at a TV at one of many places to watch sport in Cape Town?
DHL Western Province topped the log of last year’s Currie Cup, claiming the coveted trophy when they beat the Golden Lions 19 – 16 at the Newlands Stadium in October last year. The local lads have an impressive history in the tournament, winning it a total of 33 times – giving them the most titles of any team (the team with the second most titles are the Blue Bulls, claiming the trophy 23 times).
The last time these two teams squared up, Western Province emerged victorious with the final score being 34 – 29. The game was played on the Cheetahs’ home turf in Bloemfontein, so they will be looking for revenge in this upcoming game as they try their hardest to overcome Western Province’s home team advantage.
The DHL Western Province team for the game against the Cheetahs will be announced after their match against the Griquas this weekend. One thing is for sure though, this season will be action-packed and the boys will need all the support you can hurl at them. So grab your mates and get season tickets for the home games.
