30 years of democracy, 10 ways to celebrate
South African theatre audiences are in for a real treat as the majestic stage puppet production War Horse is set to delight eyes and touch hearts with month-long runs first in Joburg and then in Cape Town. The internationally acclaimed, multi award-winning play, which was adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s classic children’s novel, will make its premier in the Mother City at the Artscape Theatre from Friday, 5 December 2014 to Sunday, 4 January 2015.
War Horse is the story of a young boy, Albert, whose beloved horse, Joey, has been sold by his father to the British Army to fight in World War I. Through Joey’s eyes the perils of war come to life, and in turn the audience bears witness to death, disease and the horrors of battle. Eventually, Joey ends up caught between enemy lines, while his friend Albert takes off on a treacherous journey to find him and bring him back home.
The combination of a touching story of courage and loyalty and the breathtaking, masterful puppetry that brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage is undoubtedly the reason War Horse has becomea global phenomenon.
“The design, artistry and craftsmanship of Basil Jones and Adrian Kohler and everyone at Handspring Puppet Company has delighted War Horse audiences around the world,” says the show’s producer, Chris Harper. “Every single puppet used in the show was hand-crafted in Cape Town at Handspring’s puppet factory, and it’s only fitting that they are returning to the country where they were created, to be enjoyed by South African audiences.”
The production first opened at the National Theatre of Great Britain in London in 2007 and has since graced the stages of Broadway, enchanting a total of more than five million people on both sides of the pond. During its run in New York, War Horse received five Tony Awards and a special prize for the Handspring Puppet Company.
So, audiences can be certain that they are in for an absolutely magical night out.
