Twilight Team Run in Cape Town
Strut your stuff through the streets of the Mother City in support of the Cape’s oldest charitable organisation
Aside from all the festive season trimmings bedecking the Mother City’s streets, another Cape tradition prepares to fill the inner-city roadways with groups of fancy-dressed revellers. That’s right folks, it’s time to walk, jog, gallop, skip, crawl or monster mash your way through the streets of Cape Town as part of the Twilight Team Run on Tuesday, 2 December 2014. The much-anticipated charity-driven calendar highlight celebrates its 32nd birthday this year, and eager participants can look forward to the wildest, wackiest event yet.
In support of the Community Chest of the Western Cape (CC), the fun walk – and its 20,000 fun walkers – weaves its way from the Grand Parade through the slicing side streets of the CBD and back to the starting point (in roughly 90 minutes time). Prior to the festive saunter, a dress-up competition will be held (5pm), and afterwards, revellers are invited to party into the evening.
All proceeds from the event go to the social welfare and development organisations under the CC’s umbrella (there are over 200 in the Western Cape). As the oldest charitable body in the Cape, the CC aims to advance, empower and care for vulnerable communities.
HOW THE 2014 TWILIGHT TEAM RUN IN CAPE TOWN WORKS
Putting the F-U-N back into fun walk, the Twilight Team Run encourages partakers to band together in groups of four to six and dress up in crazy, kooky outfits that may or may not relate to something that’s currently happening in the city. In the past, everything from superheroes and Afro clowns to Golden Arrow buses and Hawaiian hula girls have taken to the streets of the Mother City to strut their stuff and rally around a good cause.
That said, it’s not absolutely necessary to tackle the Twilight Run as a team; individuals are also welcome as participants, as are multiple groups operating under the same banner or theme.
Not to mention, the charity event has become a popular end-of-year office affair. Corporates are even invited to rent a hospitality site at the after-party on the Grand Parade and provide hard-earned entertainment for their industrious worker bees.
The Twilight Team Run officially kicks off at 7pm, but it’s highly advised to arrive before 5pm to either take part or check out the best dressed competition.
