The Woman Who Would Be King

Esosa E takes you back nearly 4000 years…

One woman constitutes an army, and this production is no different. Esosa E brings her one woman show to our fair city this April at Alexander Bar, Café and Theatre. Touching down on Monday, 25 April 2016, and jetting off again on Saturday, 30 April 2016, this show chronicles the trials and tribulations of Hatshepsut, the first female Pharaoh.

Hatshepsut is widely regarded by leading Egyptologists as one of the greatest Pharaohs in the ancient world, despite the efforts to erase her memory by her male successor Thutmose III. Her name should sit alongside famous historical women like Joan of Arc, Cleopatra and Nefertiti, but her existence was long forgotten. 

In this single actress theatrical, Esosa E will take her audience on a tour of all aspects of Hatshepsut’s life; her triumphs, her enemies, and her subsequent expungement from history at the hands of her successor. In Esosa E's own words, “I have a deep personal connection to ancient Egypt, and a desire to be a part of reshaping how it is portrayed in popular culture.” With a story that still has relevance in today's society, this historical perspective may give us all a new lens for examining female roles.

This 65-minute play may be performed by only one person, but the production involves many more. Fleur du Cap Theatre Award nominee Michael Kirch is at the helm as director, and Paul Adolphsen enters the fray as writer and producer.
