The Tin Soldier Ballet at the Artscape Theatre

Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless Christmas fairy tale comes to life with new choreography and elegant music

Gather the entire family for a magical night of piqués and pirouettes this festive season! The Cape Town City Ballet's entirely new production, The Tin Soldier, is set to bless the Artscape Theatre with a handful of performances between Wednesday, 11 and Tuesday, 24 December 2013.

Set to the beautiful music of Alexander Glazunov and based on Hans Christian Andersen's timeless fairy tale, the ballet tells the enchanting story of a tin soldier’s love for a paper ballerina.

It all starts when a little boy receives a set of 25 tin soldiers for Christmas, but a lone soldier stands on a single leg.  At midnight, the toys come to life, and the tin soldier spots a paper ballerina who, too, is standing on one leg. The soldier is smitten and immediately falls in love. However, the evil jack-in-the-box, filled with envy, kicks the tin soldier out of the toy room. The love-struck warrior falls onto the street, and after two boys find him, he goes on a magnificent adventure filled with all sorts of encounters that ultimately bring him back to the ballerina.

Presented at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town, this darling new ballet forms part of the Cape Town City Ballet's schedule of annual festive season productions. The Tin Soldier, which features different dancers in the principal roles on different nights,guarantees perfect family entertainment during the upcoming holiday time.

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) will provide live music for some of the performances, and the others will be set to recorded music.

• Pensioners and students get R30 off each ticket purchased one hour before the performance when presenting a valid ID at the Artscape Box Office. 
• Block bookings for groups of 10 people or more get R10 off each ticket.
• Friends of the Cape Town City Ballet benefit from R20 off each ticket.
• TDA, U3A and UCT members get R10 off each ticket.
• Children between the ages of 6 and 16 years pay R50p/p with proof of age.
• Those who book for two or more ballets at the Artscape Theatre benefit from a 10% discount.

Note: All the above discounts, except for the block bookings deal, are only available at the theatre’s box office, and some discounts may only apply to selected areas and price ranges.
