The South African Print Gallery showcases some of the foremost printmaking artists in the country and consists of three satellite galleries in Franschhoek, Muizenberg and Prince Albert, along with the main Woodstock branch. Currently, the Franschhoek gallery – Moor Gallery Franschhoek - is displaying works from Theo Paul Vorster’s ‘Juxtaposed’ collection, while the Woodstock branch is showcasing Joshua Miles’ ‘Overberg in Print’ exhibition.
Vorster’s works will be on display in Franschhoek until Monday, 29 August 2016, and, as the title of the exhibition suggests, will delve into eccentric juxtapositions between objects and figures, with a whimsical, humorous result. Imaginative and fun, Vorster places seemingly disconnected things alongside each other, often with a maritime theme. Look out for ‘Shelter From The Storm’ which sees an old diving suit helmet become a nest for florals and feathers, and ‘Whatever Floats Your Boat,’ which suspends an old sea vessel above the waves via floating jellyfish and pelicans.
Meanwhile, in Woodstock Joshua Miles’ ‘Overberg in Print’ invites the viewer into the Overberg as it has never been seen before. Various landscapes depict the scenic region with impressionistic light and Japanese influences giving the prints a luminous quality. The show is on until Monday, 29 August 2016 and reflects the style of Miles’ other inspirations – Elsa Miles and Cecil Skotnes – along with his multi-faceted print-making techniques.
