Dark, sharp and wickedly satiric, Louis Viljoen’s award-winning The Kingmakers will be taking over the Fugard Theatre from Tuesday, 23 February until Saturday, 19 March.
Directed by Eric Abraham, the show promises witty political humour and smart dialogue, and stars Pierre Malherbe, Rebecca Makin-Taylor and Brendan Daniels. The plot sees a cohort of opposition-party strategists plot to place a neutral party member in power. Following their marginalisation after an internal party struggle, they decide to groom a supposedly ambitionless, but respected politician into a leader. This, coupled with their association with an opportunistic corporation, leads to political shenanigans and the perfect set-up for a shameless power grab, and possible revenge.
Louis Viljoen received the Fleur Du Cap award for Best New South African Script and Best New Director for this play, which, according to its write-up, “is set in the familiar world of skulduggery, backstabbing, one-upmanship, disloyalty, blackmail and profiteering, otherwise known as South African politics.”

Tickets range from R130p/p to R150p/p and are available from Computicket.com. The show starts at 8pm and is one hour and 10 minutes long.
