Looking for a little enchantment in your life, or simply on the hunt for a charming activity for kids in Cape Town? Well, look no further; we’ve got some spellbinding entertainment that’s just perfect for you! The 2014 Western Cape Junior Magician Championship competition is set to appear on stage in a puff of smoke at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch on Sunday, 31 August 2014.
Brought to you by the esteemed College of Magic (Cape Town’s only magic training institute), this one-day event is an opportunity for students from the Hogwarts-esque institution to showcase their talents and inspire budding magicians. This annual battle of the wands pits talented teen wizards against each other in two different categories: ‘Stage’ and ‘Close-up’.
During each session, performers will take the stage to execute their illusions and routines before a panel of judges and eager audiences.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2014 WESTERN CAPE JUNIOR MAGICIAN CHAMPIONSHIP
CLOSE-UP COMPETITION: Young magicians skilled in the sleight of hand art of card or coin tricks will try their best to dupe audiences in the Baxter’s Golden Arrow Studio while they’re judged on how well they engage with and keep the crowds spellbound. This up-close-and-personal form of magic is akin to the trickery of street magicians like David Blaine and Criss Angel. Show starts at 2pm and will run for an hour and a half.
STAGE COMPETITION: This contest features magicians proficient in executing dramatic, large-scale illusions with props and sometimes an assistant or two: think Harry Houdini or David Copperfield. The competition takes place in the Baxter Theatre Centre, where the intrepid young illusionists put on a show to remember! This year, special guest star and renowned New York-born comedic magician Chris ‘The Ring Master’ Capehart will also perform after the ‘Stage’ competition. Show starts at 4pm and will run for two hours.
STREET MAGIC COMPETITION: During the intervals, audiences can judge young magicians in the ‘Street Magic Contest’, a competition in which contestants showcase their skills in a walkabout manner. Members of the public will decide on who walks away with the coveted Street Magic Contest trophy.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF MAGIC IN CAPE TOWN
Brainchild of director David Gore, the College of Magic opened its doors in the 80s offering performance arts training to the youth from all walks of life. With only 34 aspiring entertainers initially, the institution has blossomed into the only magical arts training organisation of its kind in the world, now hosting more than 150 students and providing a meeting ground for children who are interested in the art of magic.
