The ITU World Triathlon Series Comes to Cape Town

Run, cycle and swim in Mzansi’s leg of this famous athletics event

If you swim like a dolphin, cycle like your legs are on fire and run like your life depends on it,  then you’re the ideal Herculean-like character to star in the next Survivor series or to enter this prestigious race. With the goal of celebrating excellence in sports, the Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town leg of the ITU World Championship Series will be coming to the Mother City on Saturday, 25 April to Sunday, 26 April 2015. Cape Town is one of ten world-class cities to host the series, which will ultimately culminate in a grand final in Chicago.  Both the sprint and the standard distance races in Cape Town will commence at Quay 6 at the V&A Waterfront.

The Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town event is designed for mass participation and is suitable for both novice and experienced triathletes. Bear in mind that you do have to be pretty fit to take part as to finish the sprint you need to be able to swim 20 lengths of a 25m pool, cycle for 40 to 60 minutes and run for another 30 to 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can enter as a team and divide and conquer the different disciplines.  The swim is the particularly challenging part; therefore, base your entry on the distance you know you can manage to swim. If you’re not a very strong swimmer yet then the sprint race is probably your best bet.

WHO CAN TAKE PART IN THE 2015 DISCOVERY WORLD TRIATHLON SERIES IN CAPE TOWN

The Discovery World Triathlon Cape Town event will be hosting elite athletes, open age group athletes and any members of the public keen to participate.

If you’re a novice: Bear in mind that you need to be fit enough to swim 500m, cycle 20km and run 5km if you opt for the sprint race. Alternatively, join a team and share the disciplines.

If you’re an athlete: The National Federations (NF) will enter athletes and the start list will be based on the athlete’s current ranking. Each NF will be given a maximum of six athletes with the host NF being given a maximum of eight spots. A maximum of 65 men and 65 women will make up the elite category with up to 75 men and 75 women in the Grand Final.

If you’re an age group athlete: The Age-Group World Championships will take place at Grand Final every year. This will still be a one-day event as in previous years. Each National Federation (NF) may enter 20 athletes in each age-group for both Olympic and Sprint distance. The host nation, however, will be allotted 25 slots in each age group for both distance races.

If you’re a schoolchild that’s over 12 years of age: Take part in the Spur Steak Ranch School Challenge and enjoy some old-fashioned inter-school rivalry and the opportunity to win awesome prizes. Both teams and individuals can enter, and the Olympic race will take place on Saturday, 25 April, while the sprint races will be held on Sunday, 26 April.

If you’re a paratriathlete: There is no separate paratriathlon for 2015, however there will be a separate start wave in the sprint distance for paratriathletes, which will be an open event regardless of category.

If you’re a corporate: Do some serious team bonding by opting for the Corporate Challenge sprint relay. Join forces with two colleagues so that each of you can tackle a different discipline. This relay will take place on Sunday, 26 April.

If you’re a spectator: Catch all the action live on TV or if you’re in the Mother City, pop down to the V&A Waterfront, Green Point Urban Park or Green Point Athletics Stadium to enjoy some spectacular spectatorship. Have a look at the route for each event and position yourself in the right spot in the City Centre to watch your favourite leg of the race.
