The Grand Exhibition International Burlesque Benefit

Revel in a celebration of sensuality and femininity as 40 burlesque beauties take to the stage in support of Rape Crisis

Clear your calendar on Saturday, 6 August 2016 so you can watch a selection of gorgeous dancers from Cape Town’s burlesque community take to the stage at the City Bowl Market on Hope Street in support of Rape Crisis.

The Grand Exhibition is back for a second year and it promises to be an event filled with feathers, grandeur, tantalising titillation and talent, featuring both seasoned solo acts and dazzling troupes.

Aside from the bevy of burlesque beauties lighting up the stage, there’ll also be a number of entertainment options on offer, from a marvellous market choc-a-block with burlesque items to a live electro swing band to get the hips swaying and the dance floor swinging. Embrace your inner old-school allure with a sexy corset and some specialty lingerie, along with other gorgeous goods guaranteed to bring out your sensual side. The market will also feature an array of tempting titbits with refreshment vendors on hand to keep guests well-fed and happy.

Later, get ready to dance the night away to DJ Dear Mrs Panda who’ll get the sound sensation started and the toes tapping. If all this activity isn’t enough to chase away the winter chill, you can also be warmed by the fact that the proceeds from the night go to Rape Crisis.

The exhibition was conceptualised by Lady Magnolia (AKA Tenille Lindeque-Joshua), who has a passion for uniting the burlesque community in aid of a good cause.

MORE ABOUT RAPE CRISIS

Founded in 1976, the Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust (RCCTT) is an incredibly important organisation that aims to empower rape survivors in the Western Cape on their journey to recovery and justice. Aside from providing invaluable support to rape survivors, the group also works to deter rape in communities, bring about essential law reform and to give strength to survivors to speak out about rape. In a province that has 6 000 recorded incidents of rape every year, RCCTT provides a crucial service, assisting on average 300 calling and 400 new face-to-face clients each month. South Africa is not known for providing adequate care or legislation regarding rape, which makes the work of RCCTT even more vital.
