The Darling Collection Arts Showcase

The stories behind a quaint town’s most precious objects told through art

If you had to choose one special object to show the world, what would it be? This question was posed to the delightful residents of Darling, who put forward 41 sentimental objects to showcase as part of The Darling Collection – a brand new musical, storytelling sensation. Tickets can be purchased at the event or you can pre-book yours by emailing collection@voorkamerfest-darling.co.za or phoning +27(0)82 321 7542.

Taking place from Friday, 29 April, until Sunday, 1 May 2016, this spectacular show is another novel idea dreamed up by Wim Visser, the brain behind the ever-popular Darling Voorkamerfest, in collaboration with Fontys University and the Darling Festival Trust.

A BIT MORE ON WHAT THE DARLING COLLECTION IS ALL ABOUT

The exhibition is entirely unique as it encompasses the Darling community’s most precious objects and tells the stories behind these. Amalgamating theatre, music, dance, film and visual arts, the showcase is both personable and profound, providing an intimate glimpse into the lives and loves of the residents of one of the Cape’s quaintest towns.

Eight students from the Netherlands’ Fontys University were tasked with bringing the objects and stories to life, through various art disciplines. Each student was assigned five stories to interpret, both through what the objects invoked in them personally and via conversations with the items’ owners. This collaborative connection between the community and students inspired the artworks developed by the talented young people over the course of April.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE DARLING COLLECTION SHOWCASE

It is these finished artworks, short productions, musical pieces and dances that’ll be showcased from the 29th of April until the 1st of May. In this way, the story of a small community becomes reinterpreted into modern forms of creative expression, invoking both nostalgia and awe. It’s a one-of-a-kind show that takes place in the same tent where the students have been endlessly dreaming, creating and practising for the past month so it’s set to be a weekend to remember! The tent is located on the corner of Durban Street and Somerset Circle and there will additionally be plenty of markets dotted around presenting plenty of artisanal produce and pretty arts and crafts.

Every object has a story and this four-dimensional display takes storytelling to a new level!
