The Wildebraam Berry Festival in Swellendam

Pick the sweetest berries and have an adventurous day out at this Western Cape dorp’s charming annual charity event

The summer season calls for outdoor activities and fun in the sun with the family and friends, and what better way to go about that than by embarking on an energetic adventure for a good cause? The folks in Swellendam, which is the Western Cape’s youngberry capital, have got all of this covered with their berry nice, fun-filled Amazing Berry Race - it’s part of the Wildebraam Berry Festival - on Saturday, 6 December 2014.

The Amazing Berry Race was created as a means to raise funds for selected charities and get the surrounding community involved with an event that is part of the Wildebraam Berry Festival, a day fiesta which celebrates the town’s uniqueness, history and everything berry.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE 2014 WILDEBRAAM BERRY FESTIVAL

BERRY NICE ACTIVITIES: At the Wildebraam Berry Estate, berry enthusiasts can pick and choose (literally!) their favourite kinds of luscious and juicy berries. Bring the kids along, make it a family day out and enjoy some local produce to boot! Better start hauling out the recipes and planning those delicious berry-laden desserts.

BERRY AMAZING RACE: This quirky charity race challenges participants to solve a certain number of puzzles in order to progress along a route and be the first to the finish. This year’s race route will be a secret, but last year’s event involved challenges like picking two kilos of sweet and delicious berries and making a detour through various landmarks. Those who register to compete will have to be decked out in the colour representing the charity of their choosing. The programme involves 10 different themed challenges that involve art, history and, of course, berries. The competition will start at the Swellenmark Shopping Mall and more clues will be revealed from there on out as the escapades get underway.  Visitors who are up for a fun day out competing also have the opportunity to win some great prizes.

ARTS, CRAFTS & FOOD: Looking for yummy gifts? Pop into the craft market and get a taste of Swellendam’s finest, from local honey to quaint handmade gifts with that special touch. Guests looking for an ice-cold beverage can sample the local craft beer on offer or grab a glass of vino to have that perfect summer chill out.  Pick between sampling hearty nosh on offer, like tasty cheeses, and buying some organic produce for your Sunday lunch.

KIDS OUTDOOR FUN: The summer holidays have started and finding kid-friendly events can be a mission. The Wildebraam Berry Festival will have a ton of things for your little one to get involved in, from slip ‘n sliding on the water slides to getting their favourite animal immortalized as a balloon.  Kids can look out for berry-picking, fun-filled puppet shows, getting a jump on the jumping castle or climbing on the cool tractor rides.
