One year ago, a group of 160 keen Capetonians were asked to share their thoughts around the meaning of the word hope, and record these ponderings on ancient wood collected from sunken ships and broken floors. These relics were collected and placed together to construct a large wooden table decorated with hidden words and inspiring messages. The table and its meanings will be celebrated at the Table of Hope Week at the District Six Museum from Friday, 1 May until Thursday, 7 May 2015.
The artwork, which brings issues to the table and then conceals them again, is an invitation for Capetonians to connect and start a conversation. The aim of it is to highlight difficult topics so we can chat about them in a hopeful and accepting environment. It’s an opportunity for us all to reflect on our past and hope for the future, and to get to the core of what is alive and important, today. This is the first in a series of tables set to be built around the world with the next one being built in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 2016.
