South African Horrorfest Cape Town

Prepare for the annual blood-curdling, bone-chilling and fear-inducing film affair that will leave you quaking in your boots!

“Believe only half of what you see and nothing that you hear.” ― Edgar Allan Poe

To celebrate the horrific time of year when witches, demons, ghosts and ghouls come out to play, the 12th South African Horrorfest flickers on to the screams (ahem)... screens at the iconic Labia Theatre from Wednesday, 26 October to Friday, 4 November 2016.

After over a decade of frightening audiences in Cape Town, this horrifying event established itself as one of the city’s premier Halloween happenings, and, as always, the highlight’s underlying concept is ghoulish fun and a bloody good time. This time around the terrifying film festival delves deep into its coffins to treat horror-lovers to a showcase of the genre’s rarest and most devastatingly gory flicks.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 SOUTH AFRICAN HORRORFEST FILM FESTIVAL IN CAPE TOWN

MOVIES & SHORT FILMS: Expect a line-up highlighting the creepy and the crawly; more specifically, indie films, classics, fan-favourites, genre-related documentaries and an impressive list of innovative short films. Many of the flicks will make both their African and South African premieres at this festival and will not be screened in any other South African cinema, much less any DVD store.

This year’s festival will feature a screening of cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show at The Labia on Friday, 28 October 2016 at 8:30pm. This interactive performance allows audience participation, so make sure to dress up and cover yourself with kooky accessories, or purchase a pack from the Love Craft Experiment stall to get everything you need to take part. Cinephiles will also have an exclusive chance to see the African premiere of Southbound, a chilling film that tells five interlocked tales of a group of travellers stuck in an endless loop through purgatory. The film will commence at 8:30pm on Monday, 31 October 2016.

LIVE SOUNDTRACK PERFORMANCE: No South African Horrorfest is complete without a performance from The Makabra Ensemble, a group made up of artists who play multiple instruments and  hail from bands such as Terminatryx (Sonja Ruppersberg and Paul Blom), Lark (Simon “Fuzzy” Ratcliffe), Mr Sakitumi (Sean Ou Tim) and Dawn Treader (Matthijs Van Dijk). These talented musos have banded together to create original and diverse soundtracks to accompany classic silent films, and they perform live while the silver screen does its thing. This year, the troupe will provide a chilling soundtrack to the legendary 1932 French-German classic Vampyr. A festival highlight, this performance is scheduled for Saturday, 29 October 2016 at 8:45pm.

BLOODY PARCHMENT LITERARY CHAPTER: Overseen by Nerine Dorman, this segment has grown into a force of its own and will take place at The Labia Theatre on Wednesday, 26 October 2016. Look forward to an evening filled with Halloween snacks, mingling and live readings from authors. The Bloody Parchment competition is back on the cards again but this year they are shaking things up. Instead of only accepting the usual short story format (up to 1000 words), they are looking for horror and dark fantasy novella entries between 15 000 and 30 000 words and short fiction (up to 3 500). A winner and two runners-up will be selected for possible publication in a collection. Don’t forget to come in costume; there will be prizes for the best dressed.

HORRORFEST HALLOWEEN DRESS-UP & MARKET NIGHT: Dressing up for Halloween is as grand a tradition as the hedonistic holiday itself, and, as always, the Horrorfest is on board and there are great prizes up for grabs. What’s more, the market night, which launched in 2011, is another one of the much-anticipated aspects of this yearly do. This unconventional bazaar features a range of exciting stalls sure to attract anyone interested in rare, strange, Halloween-related or simply awesome merchandise and products. This year, both the dress-up contest and night market will coincide with The Makabra Ensemble’s live movie soundtrack performance on Saturday, 29 October 2016.
