Hopefield Wild Flower Show

Soak up the beauty of the West Coast and its floral splendours at this annual botanical affair

There is nothing quite as mesmerising as driving through the West Coast’s sea of flowering fields at the beginning of spring. So, why not escape the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle and head out to the quaint town of Hopefield for its annual wild flower show at the local sports club from Thursday, 25 to Sunday, 28 August 2016.

Located roughly 120km outside of Cape Town on the R45, this West Coast hamlet is the oldest town in the area and home to over 500 different species of fynbos and four distinct fynbos regions, making it the perfect place to bid farewell to winter with a bit of bloom bashing.

And while nature and flora lovers can look forward to the extravagant flower display, those not so taken with foliage can also get excited about a mountain bike race, food and entertainment and more.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE 2016 HOPEFIELD WILD FLOWER SHOW

BLOOMING BUDS: In line with the way the area’s lush natural vegetation is constantly transforming, this spring the Hopefield Sports Club will morph into a horticulturist’s fantasy. Within the carefully created flower hall, plants are painstakingly arranged as authentically as possible, thus affording visitors an up-close-and-personal look at the various species of fynbos indigenous to the region (each year’s showcase is different, so those who’ve been before are still in for a treat). Otherwise, attendees can also explore the flower-filled fields and hills with tractor rides. Here’s some insight into what’s on offer thanks to the town’s four distinct fynbos zones:

  • The Renosterveld region’s vegetation is dominated by a species of grey-coloured plant called Renosterbos, most likely the reason behind its name.
  • The Sandveld area’s vegetation consists of species of succulents and fynbos that thrive in sandy and dry climates.
  • The Rietveld region is home to reed-like vegetation.
  • The Wetlands are base to unique aquatic species that thrive in waterlogged soil and very distinct ecosystems.

FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT: Aside from the kaleidoscope of local flora, the show also has plenty of entertainment on the bill for the less flower-inclined. The on-site sit-down and takeaway restaurant serves up yummy traditional fare, and the beer garden is where the jol is at, with local musicians keeping the party pumping all weekend long.

OTHER ACTIVITIES: Aside from the slew of things to do at the flower show itself, visitors to the area are encouraged to explore the historic town with a visit to the nearby museum (entry costs a mere R5p/p). Alternatively, those interested in the inner workings of an active beehive can head over to the Simply Bee Observation Centre and catch a glimpse of how busy these little insects really are (you can also stock up on honey-based products at the Simply Bee shop next door). One of most recent additions to the quaint town is Die Kunshuis (the art house), and this gallery-cum-coffee shop offers art lovers the opportunity to admire (and buy) gorgeous works while sneaking in a cuppa java and a homemade piece of cake. Lastly, Die Plaasmol (the farm mole) – located just 5km outside of Hopefield – is a kiddies’ wonderland filled with lots of things to see and do. This environmentally friendly farm has a stall, nursery and restaurant to keep the parents occupied while little ones can get up close and personal with farm animals at the petting area.
