Seedbomb and City Farm Historical Tour

Replant and rediscover the Mother City with this unique walking tour

The Seedbomb and City Farm Historical Tour is back after a successful launch in July 2014 to offer Capetonians the chance to rediscover their city through the lens of history and horticulture. This month’s on-foot excursion, which marries fun, farming and fare, takes place on Saturday, 2 August 2014.

The event is organised by The Food Route, an initiative of the World Design Capital 2014 project City of Eden, and the aim of the endeavour is to develop Cape Town into an “edible” and “equitable” city, hence bringing the concept of ”Eden” back into our metropolis. Furthemore, aware that in contemporary society we have become disconnected with the origins of our food – where it is grown and how it is produced – City of Eden is attempting to reinvigorate public and private space around the Mother City in order to create productive, visually appealing, food-yielding landscapes.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE SEEDBOMB AND CITY FARM HISTORICAL TOUR

A FARM-FILLED TRIP THROUGH THE CITY: The day takes the format of a walking tour through the city centre. Ticket-holders will start their journey at the bottom of Government Avenue (cnr Wale and Adderley streets) and proceed to farms located around town. As the trip unfolds, guests will learn about the rich and varied history of Cape Town – from stories of our indigenous people and stormy voyages around the Cape to the global slave trade, wild animals, wars and even the discovery of gold. All this is entwined with dramatic tales of farming and water.

GUERILLA FARMING: While exploring the local farms, walkers will have the chance to distribute their seedbombs, artfully designed mixtures of seeds, clay and compost inspired by an ancient Japanese farming method called tsuchi dango (‘earth dumplings’). These agricultural grenades of sort were used by guerrilla gardeners in the 1970s as a form of activism to reclaim public space and grow free food. The mixture is rolled into balls and then strewn wherever soil is available, simply relying on nature to do the rest. The seedbombs prepared by City of Eden are created using organic, heirloom and indigenous food seeds.

GRAB SOME GRUB: After visiting the first two farms, guests will be taken to the Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) Market to tuck into some delicious local, natural and organic farm food. The OZCF is a non-profit project that celebrates food, culture and community. Located next to the corner of Sidmouth Avenue and Upper Orange Street, this unique urban farming initiative promises a range of artisanal goodies, including farm-fresh fruit and vegetables, delicious bread, cheeses, fresh juices and much more. Hot and cold grub and food for vegan, raw and veggie foodies will all be available.

For those looking for an interesting and inspired way to rediscover the Mother City, this tour is sure to give you some food for thought!
