When we think of South Africa’s arts festivals the most obvious one that springs to mind is the National Arts Festival, held in Grahamstown annually. However, there is a miniature version that occurs every year for miniature people, right in the Mother City. The 15th School Arts Festival is set to launch on Tuesday, 11 August 2015 and will culminate in a gala performance on Thursday, 27 August 2015, at the Artscape Theatre.
The School Arts Festival provides the platform for our young aspiring performers to showcase their talent on a professional stage. With the aim of stimulating nation-building through a common love for theatre and the performing arts, the event also challenges learners to push their boundaries and achieve something that makes them proud.
“The School Arts Festival is probably the largest of its kind in South Africa. Artscape has decided to use this platform to celebrate the country’s 20 years of freedom and democracy,” says Marlene le Roux, Artscape’s Director of Audience Development and Education.
Last year, a total of 86 schools and approximately 2400 learners took part in the annual festival.
