Rockville 2069 A Rock Musical

Rockville 2069 Musical at the Artscape Theatre

Old school meets new school to create a groundbreaking sci-fi rock ‘n’ roll music fiesta!

Best described as the lovechild of a Mad Max-esque post-apocalyptic movie and the iconic Woodstock music festival, The Rockville 2069 musical is set to break new ground in both the local and international theatre industry with its edgy and fresh spin on the genre. The Gavin Wright-directed show will have its world premiere at the Artscape Theatre on Friday, 29 August and run until Sunday, 7 September 2014.

Let’s set the scene: It’s 2069 and disaster has struck. After a global catastrophe, only a handful of rock-loving humans are left on the last piece of habitable land on earth (a small archipelago) that is shielded by a dome-shaped force field. Beyond the shield lies a frozen wasteland and a toxic fog has replaced the world’s atmosphere. A small band of survivors, the so-called TechnoRemnants, manage to endure under these adverse conditions and have their sights set on taking over the land beneath the dome. A stand-off ensues with a massive duel event where the two sides play for their lives in a Battle of the Bands contest. All the while, a young peace-loving flower child Danielle falls for her polar opposite, the charismatic but hot-headed rocker JohnnyReb. With betrayal, death, intrigue and drama on the cards, the question is, who will be victorious, and will the star-crossed lovers have a future?

Brainchild of Johnny Ray and Bruno Paiola, this rock extravaganza is a labour of love that is nearly a decade in the making. When asked to describe the show in one sentence (a very difficult task), Durban-born librettist and composer Johnny Ray had this to say, “This is a futuristic, post-apocalyptic sci-fi rock musical that at the heart is a love story”.

And if you’re still not convinced that this is ahead-of-its-time rock musical is something you just can’t afford to miss, here are our top 15 reasons to buy your ticket today!

15 REASONS TO ATTEND THE ROCKVILLE 2069 MUSICAL AT THE ARTSCAPE THEATRE

1. AN MZANSI ORIGINAL: Boasting a unique storyline, toe-tapping techno-rock score and ground-breaking technologies, this breath of fresh air offers audiences a one-of-a-kind show that was conceptualised, composed and brought to life in the Mother City.

2.  IT’S GOING TO BE BIG: The techno-rock spectacular has signed a 10-year contract with the Dramatic, Artistic and Literary Rights Organisation (DALRO), which handles reproduction rights for stage, art and publishing in South Africa, to distribute the show on a global scale years before its opening night. Basically, this means it is destined for international success.  So, if you’ve ever wanted say you saw it before it became a world-wide phenomenon, now’s your chance.

3. SEE THE ARTSCAPE TRANSFORMED: If you’ve ever been to the Artscape Theatre’s Opera House before, you probably already have an idea of what to expect. Now, chuck those expectations in the trash, and prepare to be blown away. For one, there will be no curtains to raise. Instead, the props and set pieces will extend beyond the stage, and really give theatre-goers an immersive experience. From the foyer to the stage, the venue will be transformed into a futuristic rock concert arena.

4. A FIRST FOR MUSICALS: The creative team for Rockville 2069 threw the ‘guide to staging a musical’ out of the window and could, arguably, change the way independent productions are staged. After conceptualising and recording the musical’s soundtrack, record company EMI released the 22-track album alongside a graphic novel adaptation of the play (a first for a label of EMI’s reputation).

5. SETTING THE TREND: Aside from not following the rules, this out-there spectacular’s innovative technology and use thereof is set to revolutionise the way we look at future stage shows similar to how the 1999 flick The Matrix changed the way special effects were used in sci-fi films.

6. A MULTIMEDIA VARIETY SPECTACULAR: Definitely a first for South Africa and, quite possibly, the world, Rockville 2069 utilises numerous forms of media, performance art and costume styling to put forth a sensory experience like nothing else out there.

7. ROCKING FROM BOTTOM TO TOP: This revolutionary rock revue will also erect scaffolding-like structures inspired by the speaker towers used at the 1969 Woodstock festival to house the seven-piece rock band. How cool is that?

8. TECH(NO)-SAVVY: To accommodate its fast-paced set changes and sci-fi concept, this innovative performance will feature a 100sqm daylight LED screen, which will relay HD graphics, animations and visuals, to create a visually arresting and ever-changing landscape. And, as if that wasn’t enough, the set will also have 12 digital cameras strategically placed around the playhouse. Audiences will get to experience the performance from a number of different angles (from the rock band in the towers to the musicians in the orchestra) during the climatic ‘Battle of the Bands’ scene.

9. A STELLAR CAST: Apart from the orchestra and rock ensemble, there are also more than 20 uber brilliant cast members. The troupe consists of a range of triple-threat talent. The end product is musical perfection with that raw edge of a rock star.

10. STEAMPUNK MEETS FLOWER POWER: Plus, audiences can also look forward to seeing some cool costumes from the bespoke tailors The Little Hattery and Mystic Tribe as well as some interesting post-apocalyptic style raw hide outfits, steampunk masks and some hippie-inspired ensembles.

11. RETRO MEETS TECHNO: In an effort to illustrate the retro-meets-techno aspect perfectly, all the electronic-style tunes are created by the orchestra. Yes, you read that correctly. No digital samples were used in the making of this show.

12. AN INDOOR CONCERT: More of a concert than a musical, this jam-packed two-hour production features a score of original songs and entertainment and attendees will see a 75-person strong cast perform at this Cape Town institution.

13. IT’S CHEAP AS CHIPS: Nowhere else will you be able to experience 50 musicians perform live in an ultramodern setting, with 25 actors who can sing and dance for as little as R100p/p. Not to mention, the ‘golden circle’ tickets will only set you back R250. Plus, there is also a 10% discount for scholars, pensioners, students and block bookings of 10 or more.

14. IT’S WOODSTOCK ALL OVER AGAIN: Whether you’re old enough to remember or too young to even know about Woodstock (the music festival, not the Cape Town suburb), you can be sure of one thing: it’s happening all over again. Rockville 2069 is the 20th century’s answer to the groundbreaking 60s fiesta, and it’s set to rock your socks off and inspire a new generation of eco-champions.

15. SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: There’s a love story, ‘Battle of the Bands’ rock stand-off, some serious sci-fi elements, incredible high definition graphics and animations, a super talented cast, a live orchestra, a rock band and, of course, GREAT music! If you’ve ticked at least one of the things on this list, then you simply cannot afford to miss this musical.
