Red Bull Doodle Art Global Gallery in Cape Town

Catch 27 of the world’s finest doodles at a free curated and interactive exhibition in Company’s Garden

What is a doodle? The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “a rough drawing made absent-mindedly”. These distracted etchings often find their way onto the corners of meeting notes or are tightly squeezed into exam pad margins; though, the Red Bull Doodle Art Competition has turned that notion on its head by celebrating the art form with an international contest that aims to find the best doodler in the world.

Now, for the first time ever, the challenge’s 27 best creators will congregate in one location and make their way to the inaugural Red Bull Doodle Art Global Gallery in Cape Town. This interactive pop-up exhibition will showcase the top-notch drawings in the running for the crown at the famous Company’s Garden from Friday, 24 to Sunday, 26 October 2014.

The Red Bull Doodle Art competition has been around since 2007, and the event sends a call to artists, animators, illustrators and just about anyone with a flair for sketching to submit their doodle drawings to compete in national competitions. Once a winner is picked to represent their country, a worldwide contest is held to determine who walks away with the main prize, a cooperation deal with the Red Bull Consumer Products Team to design a graphic for a T-shirt that will be sold in the online shop and Red Bull World in 2015.

Thirty-four countries, from Argentina and Azerbaijan to Taiwan and Uzbekistan, took part in the 2014 contest, which saw a total of 32, 551 entries (of which over 2 700 were from South Africa) submitted for consideration. Now, winners from 27 of the participating countries, including the Mzansi rep Kingsley Palime, will head to Cape Town for the inaugural pop-up gallery.

Though, if you’re still undecided about whether or not to attend this really awesome event, then here are 11 really rad reasons to pencil it into the old calendar.

11 REALLY RAD REASONS TO GO TO THE RED BULL DOODLE ART GLOBAL GALLERY IN CAPE TOWN

IT’S THE FIRST GLOBAL EVENT OF ITS KIND: This will be the first time that the representatives from all over will be brought to a single location at the same time for the final announcement of the Red Bull Doodle Art winner. And where better to host this curated creative showcase than in Cape Town, title-holder of World Design Capital 2014.

IT’S GRATIS, MAHALA AND FOR FREE: That’s right folks, there is absolutely NO entry fee to this exciting event.

AN INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE: Not your average exhibition, the Company’s Garden gallery is interactive and unlike any other you've seen before. Each of the visiting countries’ winning doodles will be exhibited via installations that not only represent the artist’s country but also echo the essence of the drawing. For instance, Egypt’s winning sketch will be on display inside a big pyramid and SA artist Kingsley Palime’s drawing  will be showcased on Table Mountain and will be visible through a viewfinder in the inner-city garden. What’s more, each installation will have a touchscreen display, which offers visitors more information about the artist, their home country and their doodle.

PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN: Besides the fact that the Mother City will host the first ever public Red Bull Doodle Art Global Gallery, another reason for Capetonians to attend this inaugural event is to support South African participant Kingsley Palime. This young doodler was announced as the winner for the Mzansi leg of the competition and will stand alongside the top 26 artists from around the world to vie for the ultimate prize.

WORLD-RENOWNED JUDGES: Texas-based doodling evangelist Sunni Brown along with self-taught Cape Town street artist Faith 47 and Bulawayo-born graphic artist and designer Sindiso Nyoni will decide which of the doodles out-doodled the rest. See first-hand how these accomplished creatives rate drawings from across the globe.

A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: After rating and debating, the judges will decide who is the most deserving of them all and announce the overall Red Bull Doodle Art competition winner on Saturday, 25 October 2014.

LIVE MUSIC: Aside from checking out this experiential exhibition, doodle viewers can also get amped for live music performances on the Saturday only. For updates, check our Facebook page closer to the time.

A FREE RIDE: Hop aboard one of the Red Bull Doodle Art-branded Tuk Tuks, for a free ride to the Global Gallery in the Company's Garden. Simply tweet @RedBullZA to find a ride.

A TRIP THROUGH TIME: Most South Africans learnt about how travellers from across the globe refuelled and stocked up on fresh water and produce at the Company’s Garden through history books. Thanks to the Red Bull Doodle Art Global Gallery this meeting space is once again a ground for people from across the world to come together – only this time to show off their killer sketching skills.

TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR: Even if you cannot make it to the Mother City for the final showcase, you can still experience the amazing artworks and incredible installations via the online virtual tour, which will be available at RedBullDoodleArt.com.

YOUR VERY LIFE DEPENDS ON IT: If you suffer from near-fatal attacks of FOMO, then you simply have to attend for the sake of your own health. Plus, just stepping foot in the Company’s Garden between Friday, 24 and Sunday, 26 October 2014 will afford you bragging rights. So, the choice is yours, die of FOMO or live on the edge (YOLO)!
