Interested in hearing what kind of rock is coming out of Alaska and Oregon in the United States? You’ll be able to get your fix when Portugal. The Man, a four-piece that plays everything from grime and groove to pop and psych ballads, performs at the Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town on Wednesday, 25 March 2015. The group was initially scheduled to sound off on Friday, 20 March 2015 as a pit stop prior to their Johannesburg Sowing the Seeds festival debut, but the show needed to be rescheduled due to a technical difficulty with the flight path (for info regarding refunds, see the ticketing section below).
For those not familiar with the northern American band, Portugal. The Man initially set out to be, as lead singer John Gourley explains, “The Beatles meets Wu-Tang.” They arrived on the scene after releasing their first album, Waiter: “You Vultures”, in 2006 and went on to release six more albums, the latest of which is Evil Friends, which was released in 2013 with producer Brian ‘Danger Mouse’ Burton at the helm.
Known for his work with Gnarles Barkley and Jack White and responsible for producing award-winning albums for the likes of the Black Keys, Gorillaz and Norah Jones, Burton helped Portugal. The Man deviate from their original music with the more experimental Evil Friends, which was influenced in part by Pink Floyd’s famous Dark Side of the Moon.
All said and done though, as founding member and bassist Zach Carothers told Rolling Stone, “No matter what direction we go… we’re lucky enough to still sound like us.”
Some of Portugal. The Man’s popular hit singles include ‘Purple Yellow Red & Blue’ and ‘Modern Jesus’. Portugal. The Man have appeared at several top US music festivals, including Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo. They’ve also toured alongside famous blues rock band the Black Keys.
The opening slot for the concert has been given to South African indie favourite Desmond and the Tutus.
