Avant-garde international electronic music festival Sónar is set to transform the Mother City with one helluva music hoedown on Monday, 15 and Tuesday, 16 December 2014 (Reconciliation Day) at the Good Hope Centre.
Although 2014 marks the world-famous experimental Spanish fiesta’s official South African debut, local electro enthusiasts might remember getting a taste of Sónar in 2012, when an abridged version of the party made an appearance at the annual Design Indaba.
This year’s event, which is brought to you by Olmeca Tequila and Seed Experiences (the good folks behind the annual sell-out music festival Rocking the Daisies), is honouring a pledge to bring EDM lovers the best on the electronic scene. Accordingly, the Cape Town leg of the festival (a smaller dose of the event will also go down in Johannesburg on Friday, 12 December) will be hosting massive headliners – Pet Shop Boys, Bloody Beetroots and 2manydjs – as well as a host of both established and emerging local artists.
The Bloody Beetroots are an Italian electro house and dance-punk group which formed in 2006. The act, which consists of Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo on guitar and keyboard and Tommy Tea on FX, is often noted for the black venom masks they wear on stage.
Having played at this year’s festival in Barcelona, 2manydjs are no stranger to Sónar. The alternative act, which is made up of brothers David and Stephen Dewaele, is known for thrilling audiences with a high-energy combo of techno, progressive rock, funk and even R&B styles. The duo is also known for their side project, Soulwax.
For those not in the know, Sónar International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art is a new-edge cultural offering that explores and experiments with the latest trends in the EDM scene. The popular fandango recently celebrated its 21st year in Barcelona, and since 2002, it’s put down roots around the world, showcasing the hottest international acts at more than 50 different global events.
Cape Town along with Barcelona, Tokyo, Mexico and Reykjavik make up the five hosting cities this year.
